Honestly, even just more clarity on her "criminal" status would've been helpful. I don't even recall if they said why she'd been arrested.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Resisting arrest and something, I think.

I actually just thought about it and realized how bad this is as a standalone film. Things like the Force are never properly explained, Darth Vader isn't established as a character, nor are any other antagonists. The film has no satisfying conclusion without knowing what happens in A New Hope.

That's to be expected really. Sometimes it's better that way.

Yeah, I feel like the 8th entry in a continuous story should be terrible as a standalone product, especially when it's meant to "slot in" like Rogue One was. People who've stuck around that long don't need the basics explained to them again, and if new people are lost, they probably should've started from the beginning.

I kinda liked that they give the audience a little credit. Same way I'm glad Marvel is assuming we know about a radioactive spider and Peter failing to prevent the death of Uncle Ben in the Tom Holland iteration of Spider- Man.

Yeah, as a fan, I would have been really upset if this movie went through and explained the Star Wars universe. That wasn't its job. Anyone expecting a standalone shouldn't have been. Plus, at this point I'm pretty sure people who haven't seen any of the Star Wars movies would understand what the force is.

I dunno, it seemed pretty clearly marketed as a standalone film (and judging from the OP, I wasn't the only person that thought so), and they did a lot in the film that suggested to me that they really wanted to stand out from the original movies. They also really shot themselves in the foot by not including an opening text crawl this time around, since those are a cheap and easy way to recap events so the audience isn't lost. I don't really think they needed to explain everything in depth, but most movies in a multi-movie franchise includes bits of dialogue that give you an idea of what's what.

Omitting the name "Star Wars" from the title does hint toward them attempting to do something like that but it was more of a marketing trick, I assume, than a legitimate shot at doing a standalone thing.
