Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
Raising Arizona, Big Lebowski, and O Brother Where Art Thou.
I had wanted to see True Grit when it came out, but I never got around to it. There have been a bunch of times I've considered watching Burn After Reading and ended up watching something else instead.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
Wait, are you okay with horror movies? Not like that worthless 'Halloween H20' crap. 'No Country' is our generation's 'Silence of the Lambs', honey bunny, believe it.
I'm not saying "don't watch it", not at all. Just...don't be overly surprised if you feel weird after. I took Sis to it, and had to talk to Sis about it for a couple hours at Johnny V's after. And then my big Republican uncle didn't really get it a couple years later. I talked to him, and I hope I helped.

Nah, I'll watch it. Here and there I'll watch a horror film if it sounds interesting. And I've seen some great movies that made me feel uneasy in the end. Oldboy comes to mind immediately.

...'Oldboy' (the real Korean one) is amazing. 'No Country For Old Men' is slightly better.

I still don't get No Country For Old Men, but I like it. O' Brother, Where Art Thou is pretty dang good too.
I've only seen the western version of Oldboy. Weird and gross and creepy, but interesting.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
Original 'Oldboy' is dynamite. It's the centrepiece of a trilogy that director made on the subject of revenge (the other two being ''Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance' and 'Lady Vengeance'. Go ahead and skip those. They're wank compared to 'Oldboy'. I don't remember anything from 'Lady Vengeance': meanwhile that hallway fight from 'Oldboy" is etched into my soul). I haven't seen the remake, but I assume I don't need to, because remakes also are usually wank.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
Ooh. Ooh.
So I'm walking through the Batman flicks. I know other people got other opinions. It's fine. I think 'Batman 89' is perfect forever personally. Disagree all you like.
So that moment when Bats is draggin Vicks out the museum, and he tells her 'get in the car', and she goes 'which car' like a fool, and then there's that splash. Not just musically-------------new rad batmobile is such a blast out of left-field we probably all need a quick drying-off. [EDIT: Sorry I'm gross. Help me towel off, we can talk later.]
That big 'ka-blamm' sting when they show off the Batmobile is my favourite part of 'Batman 89'. Fight me. (Or pity me. Next is 'Batman Returns'. How much can a man barf.)

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
^Aw, I like Returns too.
49) The Hunger Games: Mockingjay pt. 2 - B-
Here's the thing that always gets me about the Hunger Games world: the Capitol has technology that verges on downright omnipotent magic. The stuff that they put in the arenas & that they use in the final battle violates the laws of physics. With that kind of control over the fabric of reality, they could just *feed everyone*, & then nobody would WANT to rebel against them!
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
I've seen all 5 of those movies, & Burn After Reading is definitely the weakest of the lot.Deku Tree wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2024 11:40 pmRaising Arizona, Big Lebowski, and O Brother Where Art Thou.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
Hey, I would be overjoyed if I liked 'Returns' more. It sounds like a better movie on paper. Penguin's my favourite Batman villain in just about every other incarnation (comics, 60s show, Arkham games and especially TAS), I love Danny DeVito and Michelle Pfeiffer and good old Christopher Walken. It should have been my favourite movie. Clearly something went wrong, and it ain't my fault.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
^^ I only saw the first Hunger Games movie, it just came off as a much worse, sci-fi version of Battle Royale (which itself wasn't the best movie), so I'm not surprised there's such a big plothole.
^ He's one of my favorite too. Danny DeVito excelled in that role, his Penguin spooked me pretty good when I saw that movie as a little kid, so he's the most memorable Batman villain to me.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
I disagree. Penguin's supposed to be a gentleman criminal. Like, think of Moriarty, or Ratigan, right. Like, DeVito's Penguin is way out of the mold----------------he spends very little time in the Penguin outfit. Shouldn't he have a tailed coat and spats and a top hat and monocular? How much of DeVito's screentime does he have a cigarette-holder clenched in his teeth? This is bush-league, man.
DeVito's Penguin is gross and horrible. I'm not talking about his appearance, he's a disgusting monstrosity. Can you imagine Burgess Meredith's Penguin biting someone's nose off, or talking about his sexual prowess? I sure can't.
Hey, TAS made Mr. Freeze non-stupid. Remember "Heart of Ice"? They did something similar with Penguin after 'Batman Returns' sucked my butt. I don't remember the episode title; Penguin had a redemption arc. He got out of jail and wanted to reform, some lady decided to play him, he thought he'd found love at last and he was trying to be better. But it didn't last. I guess I'm not surprised TAS told a better Penguin story than 'Batman Returns'; obviously they came up with at least two better Mr. Freeze stories than 'Batman and Robin' (aka "Heart of Ice" and "Sub-Zero"). How hard is it to not be revolting and stupid?

50) Independence Day - B+
51) Mean Girls (2024) - B+. Cast is on point (except new Kevin, who's a little toothless), & there are a few nice twists from the original, but the songs are hit-&-miss. New Aaron is very goofy looking, & it's an odd choice for a romantic interest.
And remember, "Welcome to Earth."

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
I watched "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie – Scarlet Bond". The series is only decent and the film is worse, I'd describe it as watchable. It has the most mustache-twirling villain I've seen in a while, very boring.
The most notable thing about it is having not one, but two fake-out deaths. That's so bad it's laughable. I'm making the film sound worse than it is, there's redeeming value, notably the fight scenes. That's...about it. It also looks pretty nice.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
^Those mangas and animes always sound dumb. Seems like every time I see a new manga series at MKE2, its title is like thirty words longer than it would need to be if the premise were interesting. I don't think I need to read "OMG! My Boyfriend Dumped Me, and then I Got Isekai'ed Into the Dungeons and Dragons Campaign He Started in His Hardcore Minecraft Server With His Current Girlfriend, and I'm a Cactus?!? Senpai My Love is Prickly"--------kind of sounds like it's got its heart on its sleeve.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
Lol that's the main reason I avoided that slime anime for a while, and most others named similarly. The ridiculous naming conventions of modern anime is strange, it's like some kinda trend that came out of nowhere and stuck. What happened to just " Cowboy Bebop".
That was a pretty good fake anime title btw, they should hire you.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
Ahahaa. Imagine if 'Akira' came out today, and they tried to give it a title based on the modern goofy naming conventions. As complicated as 'Akira' is, the title alone would probably look like the Constitution.
Them dumb long titles can screw off. 'Ghost Talker's Daydream' is evocative as all get-out. Makes you actually want to read the back cover.

Re: 100 Movies for 2024!
Even when the show has a reasonable title, the *arc* names get wacky....
