The power of microtransactions and cheap impulse purchases. People spend a lot of money a little at a time, so they never even notice how much it is. I hear complaints that companies are evil and everybody hates their monetization efforts, but they do it because that's not reality.
I'm guessing around the 1996-1997 mark would be Nokia. They had phones for a decade before then, which oddly enough people used to talk to each other. I'm sure they were pretty terrible for gaming, but I could see playing something like Snake.
To me, you are the teacher in the Charlie Brown cartoon.
