Slippi isn't technically a mod, it's an emulator optimized for Melee netplay.

On the plus side, this move has gotten people so riled up that it's very likely something will come of it. Many are likening it to 2013 when Nintendo tried to have Melee banned at EVO, only to back down after immense outcry.

(You actually don't need to mod the game at all to use it with Slippi but thats not really the point)

I can't say this is the fault of Kotaku or whoever this time; Nintendo has been sponsoring TBH for years. The fact that they have Melee this year is all the info you need, since any online tournament with Melee in it is inherently not going to feature 100% Nintendo-approved setups.

Interestingly, Nintendo originally asked The Big House organizers to cancel just the Melee tournament, but they stuck to their guns which lead to the C&D of the whole thing. Whether that's the right move or not depends on who you ask, but I at least admire the solidarity.
