It'll give you even more reasons to hate Goku, considering he's
Spoiler.
partly responsible for the destruction of several alternate universes by Zeno.
A lot of people were saying that but it's actually thanks to him that any of them had a chance at all.

I got distracted by Tales of Symphonia again as well as a noticeable lack of my Husband in this arc on account of he's in an alternate future forever now, RIP.

Although I have been meaning to catch up because I have heard from p much everyone that **** been lit. Plus, mommy tracksuit 18 and the return of 17.... I'm down.

Guys

I started watching DBZ again

I am approaching it from an informed perspective this time around. My previous interaction with the series was going in completely blind and so I didn't expect ANYTHING - goku being from space, gohan being precious, goku not understanding him, something something piccolo something something parenting. Coupled with the fact that the online DBZ community cannot for the life of itself see Goku as anything other than flawless and perfect and can't seem to handle flawed characters whatsoever, I just got real salty for a real long time, and never really got over the Cell saga.

HOWEVER. This time. This time, I know what happens. I know how things turn out and I know what to look for. BUT! Episode 1 (of DBZ, not DB) Goku is like.... really endearing. He's just country bumpkin dad with a smol child he wants to teach how to punch things but it's not going great so far and his mom doesn't want him to. Honestly both of Gohan's parents are wack as **** but they're anime characters so like, you know. But country bumpkin dad Goku is wholesome. He protecc.

I am trying to approach this watchthrough with paying more attention to Goku as a character. I know exactly how I feel about Gohan, but I want to try and watch Goku's development this time around. Especially because - despite the fact that r/dbz will literally never admit it - at the end of the Cell saga, Goku's inherent misunderstandings of his son are acknowledged and he sacrifices himself to own up to it. That is a good moment that literally everyone in this insufferable fandom dismisses. I want to appreciate Goku as a flawed and growing character, a new dad sort of figuring **** out and ****ing up along the way.

I will never forgive Goku but I can try to understand Goku. We are going to give this another shot.

also i love early dbz aesthetics. shout out to raditz, who showed up and retconned the entirety of DB lore and then dies immediately

Have you ever watched original Dragon Ball? Goku is a lot more endearing as a child than as a parent.

I tried to because I do think I would like it but I couldn't get past the very 80's anime sexism in the really early episodes. Not that DBZ doesn't still have its share of Master Roshi, but it's a lot more toned down in that era. I might give it another try because I think once it gets going I'd really enjoy it but the first several episodes put me off (and I HATED Oolong).

would be nice to see Yamcha actually be relevant doe :,)

y'all I somehow forgot that Piccolo just nukes the moon out of existence to solve the transformation issue and I'm losing it. Like, Piccolo was a damn visionary. You know how EVERY SINGLE WEREWOLF MOVIE EVER ends with the werewolf dying because there is no cure to their curse, etc? Even in **** Harry Potter where there IS a cure of sorts the werewolves still all die. Well if only SOMEONE had the common decency to just BLOW UP THE DAMN MOON, we wouldn't be having this problem now would we

IIRC, that was also the solution to destroying the Mockingbird army.

And remember, "I'm-a Scout, a robot guy!"

Piccolo is such a questionable character in the anime. Technically a clone. Sometimes he has green blood, sometimes it's red. Just makes clothing appear out of thin air like a magician. Just stretches his limbs from time to time couple hundred feet. Never get to see what his feet look like under those shoes. The list goes on.

Yamcha has possibly the best character development of the series. It's really genuine and simple but it works and is really underrated. Sure, everyone points at Vegeta or Piccolo but they're kind of extreme. Gonna actually put this in spoilers.
Spoiler.
Yamcha was just a bandit but he wasn't super cut throat, and he was afraid of girls. He became a really cool hero who overcame that. Then he kind of became a two-timing jerk hero. It's a really different flavor of development.
Too bad DBZ basically threw him in the trash.

oh yeah, and dont read toriyama's lady red if dragon ball has content you find objectionable lol

Me and a friend always have a laugh because his voice sounds EXACTLY like the voice actor who does the english dubs for Yamcha. It's like freaky weird he gets told it all the time. When I first met him in highschool it was the first conversation we had with each other when he said his name.
