AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I don't know what possessed me to re-watch this series, given that the last time I saw it (probably like 6 years ago) I loved it, finished it, had a deep and burning desire for m O R E, and was left with an empty gaping void knowing that there would never be a Season 3 or closure on certain points because Nickelodeon is a rude sack of garbage. *shakes fist*
But I did re-watch it, and it was just as excellent as I remember - I actually found myself enjoying it more because I identified with the adult characters as well as the kids this time around, and the entire cast is gold - and the ending left me just as empty inside.
Things that are A+ 10/10 about this show include:
- Frida and Manny are the best protagonists. What do you get when your main characters are true neutral and chaotic neutral 13-year-olds, and one of them has superpowers? Two kids who kind of have consciences sometimes except when they don't which is often? In a city rife with bad guys and good guys but mostly bad guys? This show. This show is what you get. And it's all shenanigans all the time, except when there are some legitimately good and genuine heartwarming moments, and then it's back to shenanigans. Frida and Manny's dynamic is literal perfection my friends
- Family dynamics are so good. This show is basically just a giant Mexican soap opera; virtually everyone either dated or married and divorced one another and have now resorted to either blowing one another up or fighting crime or becoming librarians (or some mixture of the above). The main character's dad is a superhero, his grandpapi is a supervillain, and they all live together in the same house which is a recipe for success. Frida's family is also........ lively. Tfw the police chief's youngest daughter is punk rock; ALSO a recipe for success.
- obviously it's a cartoon so it's meant to be funny but honestly some of the jokes are absolutely ****ing hilarious
- the character designs and just overall style is just really appealing. It's really awesome to see a show so heavily influenced and centered around Mexican culture and aesthetics, but also the caricature-like designs are just heckin great
So anyway this show is excellent. 26 episodes of "why are there only 26 episodes???" Would recommend to friends so they can suffer and get salty alongside you about how there isn't more.
Speaking of "isn't more", I've made the mistake of digging into the creative teams' twitters and deviantarts and learning all about plans that were fully fleshed out for the Season 3 we never got. Like a villain who was Django's father (#confirmed Sartana and Puma's kid), furthering the point that "this show is literally a Mexican soap opera"; or how Frida was going to inherit Maria's glove and be the new Plata Peligrosa which would have been the BEST THING EVER..... lots of good ****. *sighs wistfully*
anyway pls watch this show so i have more than literally just Val to talk to about it

You know, I used to have a ton of screencaps that I took of El Tigre, but they seem to have been lost to time, so instead here's a watermarked gif of Grandpapi doing the Happy Dance.

This was one of the few shows I ever got really into. I loved the characters, the humor, the designs, the music, all of it. And it's a damned shame the show ended after only two seasons. I really should get around to watching The Book of Life sometime...

I was never very into El Tigre at the time, but I do remember watching it quite a bit at my grandparent's house. I should probably rewatch it.

Ah yes. El Tigre, my favorite anime. I love the bit where Manny punches Sartana and then goes "omae wa mou shindeiru" and then she explodes.Valigarmander wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2017 5:27 amYou know, I used to have a ton of screencaps that I took of El Tigre, but they seem to have been lost to time, so instead here's a watermarked gif of Grandpapi doing the Happy Dance.

Book of Life is good and funny and cute and visually stunning but I still prefer El Tigre by a landslide. Mostly because Manny and Frida are more hilarious as protagonists and all of the soap opera drama is delegated to the secondary cast members. ...well mostly. maybe not all. ...anyway, Book of Life is still 100% worth watching.
(Apparently they're planning a second and third installment centered on Joaquin and Maria respectively, which is really neat.)

^ it's good, rewatch it.
