20 Criticisms of a Great Movie/TV Show/Animation

#1

Post by Apollo the Just » Mon Aug 28, 2017 9:06 pm

Just copying ideas don't mind me. As much as I would love to start off this topic with Detective Conan, I don't think quite enough people here have watched it for that to be productive. So let's go with:

DRAGONBALL Z

1. Dear god the pacing drags. Infamously, "this planet will be destroyed in 5 MINUTES!!!! ... I'm sorry did I say 5 minutes? I meant ten episodes." The fights are soooo dragged out dude

Your turn! Also anyone who makes a joke about "u said GREAT show, dbz is trash" will be banned

3. There is no narrative reason that Gohan's form at the end of the Cell saga should be a stepping-stone to Goku's new post-death-training form. Calling them Super Saiyan 2/3 was dumb and undersells literally 2 enormous arcs of foreshadowing and character development for Gohan.

4. The supporting cast becomes more and more useless as time goes on until by the end of the Buu saga the only fighter worth a damn is Goku.

7. From start to finish, the Android/Cell saga is just a pileup of stupid mistakes. Everything could have been resolved in a couple episodes if anyone among the heroes had half a brain.

8. To go along with #2, the massive power creep. Everything the cast fights is like, the strongest being in the world...then the galaxy...then this quadrant of space...etc etc until everything is gods and then it's like, well, where do we go from here?

11. Hero spams beam attacks at enemy, a huge cloud of dust obscures enemy, hero chuckles confidently because SURELY NOBODY COULD SURVIVE THAT ONSLAUGHT, dust dissipates revealing enemy undamaged, hero spends half a minute gasping in disbelief, repeat a dozen more times during the saga.

12. Satisfaction of landing The Final Hit is greatly diminished when there's a good 50% chance that whatever hit has most recently been built up for 10 episodes isn't **actually** the final hit and they SURVIVED and the NEXT one is gonna be the final hit for REAL.

Cell saga actually did this well, the last kamehameha was 100% final and satisfying (although there was still that other final blow that was totally not final right before it). Frieza on the other hand was ridiculous, oh he's just been literally bisected, but he's still fine.

13. literally what is the point of multiple supporting z-fighters other than to die, especially in later sagas

14.) There are multiple instances of poor animation or off-model shots. This can probably apply to almost all shows, so here's a specific example.

15. Why doesn't 18 get to do anything cool after joining the heroes? All she does is bone Krillin and throw a match against Mr. Satan.

16. There was literally no point to the arc in the Buu saga where Gohan spends like 10 episodes getting buffed by the elder Kai dude in the stupidest deus ex machine fashion because all that happens is he shows up and then immediately gets eaten and dies with everyone else so Goku and Vegeta can have the fight

At least Gotenks failing to defeat Buu was entertaining and in character for them, for Gohan it was just pointless and frustrating. They were doing so well with his character in the early parts of that arc, too.

17. Most of the movies are just compressed retellings of arcs from the main series, and none of them fit chronologically.

18. Trunks's color scheme looked cooler in the manga and his hair actually matched his mom's

(By which I mean they should both have cool blue-purple hair, not pink or teal)
