Review The Last Thing You Watched

Saw 'Baby Driver' with my homey Shane today.

I don't often say this. But I think this is one of those kind of perfect movies. Like 'Princess Bride', or 'Die Hard', or 'Annie'. 'Turbo Kid' and all. Kind of movie whose mere existence is balm to the soul. Like, you slouch home after an awful day in a filthy mood, angry at the world, pacin about your place fantasising about telling people off or slapping them around or whatever, and then you happen to glance over your DVDs and you see your copy of 'Rocky', and it calms you. "World isn't such a bad place. 'Rocky' exists. 'Rocky' wouldn't exist if the world was all just scumbags and nazis everywhere all the time. Just gotta stay positive. Don't gotta be the champ-------just gotta go the distance. Yeah.'

Popped in 'Moana'. Good movie.

Favourite moment is at the start, during the firstest song, when Chiefy-guy says 'Consider the coconut!', and everybody else goes, 'the WHAT?!?' It's so, so effin good, dude.

Spiderman Homecoming.

You know, I don't love superhero movies. I'll see them if someone wants to bring me to one, and I'll be entertained, but in general I watch them and then move on with my life afterward feeling like I could have gone without. Especially since I feel there's a new dang superhero movie out every week now.

But I gotta say this one was pretty much marketed at me specifically. It had literally ALL of my favorite storytelling tropes. I like young protagonists over older ones in general and I really like coming of age stories, so this was definitely my favorite Spiderman movie out of all the recent ish ones I've seen. (Awkward high school Spiderman is best Spiderman.) Peter's dynamic with Tony was straight up Gohan-Piccolo brand AJ's Favorite ****^TM. I also REALLY liked the character development of the villain; the writing and characterization were fantastic overall. Really good flick, definitely the only recent superhero movie I've actually genuinely cared about. Would watch again.

'Rick and Morty' Ep 3.2

...I really liked it. It was interesting to see the characters each having their own baggage to sort through, and trying to deal with it in varied unhealthy ways.

I just finished season 1 of Netflix Castlevania. I never thought a video game movie/show could actually be good un ironically, but Netflix castlevania proved me wrong and then some. I just hope it doesn't drop in quality with season 2, as is the fate of many great shows.

Marathoned Rick and Morty season 3 1-5. Excellent show, and usually best when binged. Lots of great character moments for everyone, I especially love Summer this season. And of course, LOTS of baggage for everyone dealt with wonderfully (and by that I mean terribly)

I watched The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power, which was about the level of direct-to-DVD-ness I expected it to be. Not really fun-bad except a few super-corny lines and the fact that they named the high priestess of an all-female temple FEMININA like some **** fanfiction. Rutger Hauer and Lou Ferrigno show up for like two minutes apiece though

We watched about 20 minutes of the Netflix live-action Death Note and just...couldn't. I had to beg him not to leave me alone with that movie.

Only thing missing was sparkly vampires...

On a more positive note, we watched the Castlevania series the other day, too, and really enjoyed it.

Agreed. I liked that movie a lot, found it more appealing than HP in some ways in that people could actually use magic in the world around them rather than the protagonists needing to adhere to school rules... but I felt the story it was telling could have been more powerful if it didn't feel like they tried to scale it up beyond its scope.

Still really liked it tho.

For sure. Like, if the plot had basically been "Magical Beasts escape from case into New York Coty, we have to get them back in!" and seriously nothing more, I think it would have benefited the movie.

I watched 'Star Trek V' for the first time in ages. Worst TOS flick, but still better than 'Insurrection' or 'Nemesis'.

Still an okay movie. Plus I had the Rifftrax going, so that was fun.

I just binged through season 4 of Bojack Horseman

A Twitter friend told me he thought this season was less devastating than previous seasons, but overall sadder. I agree. There's nothing here that makes you feel like Sarah Lynn's death or the New Mexico story, but there's a LOT of ****. "Ruthie," "Stupid Piece of ****," "Time's Arrow" and "The Old Sugarman Place" are all brutal in their own ways.

I loved just about everything involving Bojack and Hollyhock's relationship and how it played out through the season. Exploring Bea and the Horseman/Sugarman past further was also very well-done. They did some great stuff visually exploring time and memory.

The change of animation during Bojack's internal monologue during "Stupid Piece of ****" was also especially well done. I think that episode did a phenomenal job showcasing the mindset of a depressed person.

Princess Carolyn's storyline was also fantastic. "Ruthie," man. Lots of growth to that character this season.

The big issue with the season is that while Bojack and Princess Carolyn had a lot of character growth through the season and the Hollyhock storyline was a great season-long saga, it meant the other characters' stories suffered a bit.

I think the Mr. Peanutbutter election storyline was pretty solid, but as soon as it stopped, a lot of the characters stalled a bit. I was disappointed in the lack of Diane-Bojack interactions aside from them getting drunk after the earthquake. The way they ended the season with Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane felt like water we've treaded with these characters more, and they just don't feel like they grew much.

Meanwhile I think Todd suffered the most. I was really disappointed they didn't do more with Todd dealing with his newfound asexual identity. Why did he just end up with the girl with the BBB at the end? What happened to Emily? Especially after the campaign storyline, Todd was just kinda tossed aside. I laughed at the dentist-clown stuff a bit, but it felt tacked on just so he'd have something to do. I just wish the storylines and characters meshed a bit more.

Overall, season 4 was still great despite some clear flaws. The Bojack storyline is more than worthwhile and really effective. Even when things seem a bit weak, it's still one of my favorite shows.

Just saw (most of) Predator. It was pretty sick, though there were too many commercials.
