Have watched:

Mob Psycho 100, which was EASILY my favorite anime of the last few years. This is a work that shows ONE at his absolute best, and the animators just **** KILL it with the big, gorgeous mixed media presentations. Everything about this little short ride was incredible and GOOD CHRIST I WANT MORE. I think I'll pick up reading the Manga for sure.

One Piece Film GOLD, which was a solid short lil One Piece movie with a few contrivances here and there that kinda took me out of it. That said, it did what any good OP film should do (with exception for or perhaps more accurately a special shout out to the untouchable great outlier Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island, which is in a whole nother league), which is give me a condensed OP arc feel and make me give a **** about these non-canon Oda designs. I'll simply state that the villain and side characters here are mostly tops. Definitely a solid time.

Miller's Crossing. This movie is just **** killer. I love the Coen brothers, something about the blurred moral compass of their characters makes their movies undeniably unique. I loved Gabriel Byrne and Albert Finney here, and in particular there's a scene around 45 minutes in that is incredibly well executed involving "Danny Boy" and one badass gangster shootout. I like that it's a mob film that feels a little like Yojimbo, all the while creating a unique identity for itself and delving even further into the way its characters interact and how they stage their moral spiderwebs. I almost liked this as much as Fargo and probably WOULD if Fargo wasn't overall a little more focused.

I suggest not just starting where the anime picks off but re-reading from the beginning. Some things are told a little differently and it's interesting to see in what ways. I thought Ritsu's arc specifically was paced more effectively and built up more dramatically over time in the manga.

My favorite arc in the series is after the anime ends, pls read the manga I love the Mogami arc so much and have no one to talk about it with

I watched a few episodes of Cromartie High School since that's getting talked about again and I'd never seen it and... dude. This is one of the funniest shows. I don't even wanna get too eloquent with the praise, it's just flat out hilarious and I love it. Excited to binge more!

And True Grit, the remake by the Coens. Another great Coen film with excellent vibes and tone throughout. It's a bit rough tryna parse what Jeff Bridges is saying but otherwise the acting is incredible. It had some similarity in it's darkly comic western stylings to Django Unchained, another new western I love. Overall no issues here, great watch.

An episode of Ouran High school Host Club was playing at the boba place me and my roommate go to yesterday. We stayed for like 10 minutes after getting our drinks to watch anime like the weebs we are. I haven't seen that series in so long, but it is up there with Saiki-kun no Psi Nan and Daily Lives of Highschool Boys as "best slice of life anime of all time ever." 10/10, why is Tamaki so extra

Finished the Cromartie anime. I love that it got oddly philosophical towards the end while retaining its measured weirdness. This is an underwatched masterpiece in comedy. It was meta without being overbearing, its characters were all lovable and I don't think there was a single time where I was annoyed to be going through an episode through any single one of them's point of view. It had this grasp of both visual and dialogue-based comedy that felt so natural, yet every line served a purpose so as not to delve at all into the territory of improv banter (something an Anime, especially a dub, can't usually do anyway). Speaking of the dub, I'm glad I decided to quit being a hipster and choose the dub for this one. The acting is top notch and the cast clearly really enjoyed doing the show. I'm very glad I decided to watch this at long last, and it will have a special place in my heart forever for that episode where the doctor gives the Cromartie dudes a checkup alone.

Watched 'The Two Towers' last night with some cousins. They hadn't seen it before. They were enthralled-------------I was pretty bored. Sauron isn't an interesting villain. Big doofy fiery eyeball yelling 'ooga booga' at the world. Wow. Look how impressed I'm not.

They should have given Wormtongue more screentime. I like that guy. He has an actual personality. Plus he's only played by the best actor in the movies (good on Brad Dourif, man. I like him, and we don't get him a whole lot. Pretty much LotR, the stupid-ass Child's Play movies, and 'Deadwood', and not a lot else).

Movie wasn't quite as trite as I recall it being, but it wasn't exactly great, either. One of those movies that feels exactly as long as it is. Next time my cousins come over, think I'll suggest 'Hudson Hawk' instead of any LotR flick. Darwin and Minerva Mayflower, now, there's a couple of villains for you. Loaded with personality. Almost too much personality. 'Hudson Hawk' is the best, man. Like who doesn't love 'Hudson Hawk'.

I just watched Baby Driver and it's late and I'm kinda tired so I dunno how much I'll talk about it but holy **** was this a great thriller. It's a really nice blend of stylistic action thriller with just enough levity throughout to keep it going. The entire idea of Baby's soundtrack is so well-ingrained into the movie and Edgar Wright did a phenomenal job meshing the cues from the pop music with other audio cues as well as visuals. I dunno if it's my favorite movie of the year (it's really hard to top Get Out) but it's phenomenal nonetheless. A++.

The Grand Budapest Hotel. Wow, man, I really liked this one. Combined into one gorgeous package are the best bits of comedy and drama, and some of the most hilarious comedy I've seen in a while at that. I could go on and on about the cast, but in particular I wanna highlight how beautifully directed and realized the visual storytelling here is. It's been said to death, I'm sure, that this is a beautiful film, but it's said because WOW IT IS SO TRUE. The strong, vivid backdrops and combinations of multiple techniques layered on top of one another create this almost surreal quality, all while grounding the story with an adventurous plot and excellent dialogue. The film never feels as pretentious as I inwardly feared it would (for some reason), and in fact it feels wistful and, Ralph Fiennes's fantastic fit of cursing and dark undertones of war and politics aside, relatively innocent in places, which I should come to expect from Mr. Anderson's work. Make no mistake, this is still a black comedy and it does have some particularly gnarly moments, but it's a joy to watch nonetheless and I'm glad I picked it up.

Logan. Don't wanna say too too much since the hype has taken care of that for me, but it does live up. It's brutal, visceral Hard R stuff, even though it doooooes sorta try a little too hard for that as many have pointed out. I admit that I was a little more critical while watching and felt there's some weaker moments (I felt like the villains, especially, were a little underdeveloped and uninteresting and while the argument can be made that they aren't the focus, they did feel a little thrown together for me). That said, it's definitely the strongest X Men film I've seen and I appreciate it for that.

Rewatched SU-----'Storm in the Room' earlier. Not really sure I like it.

On one level this ep is real sweet to watch. On another it's kind of a wankfest. Has to be said.

Scream - Holds up pretty well though some of it is just so 90's. Good slasher, some decent laughs here and there. Also Matthew Lillard might be the most punchable actor ever and that's kinda what he's going for here but still.

Catwoman - Hadn't watched this since I was a kid. Worse than I remembered. Absolutely laughable film.

Moana - Another solid film in Disney's current run. Really liked the music here, really did a great job. The story's very very simple Disney stuff but didn't mind it. I quite liked The Rock and Jemaine Clement in their roles.

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. I mean, this is just pure ****' rad fun. I was surprised that I liked Mel Gibson as much as I did in this one. I found his charisma and unflappability a bit more charming than Tom Hardy's also excellent crack at that sort of character. It's a no brainer for me to love this film.

Also saw some snippets of Gojira Vs. King Ghidora and Gojira Vs. Destroyah during a weird 4th of July Kaiju marathon and man do I ****' love those big dumb cheesy monsters

^^'Moana' felt slightly less...safe than 'Frozen'. I feel like maybe it trusted the audience more. No pointlessly evil moustache-twirling villain, very few characters for much of the runtime, no out-of-place romance subplot...no incredibly irritating comic relief (*and then the void whispered, 'you hate Olaf because you are him, Boo, you unfunny lump of crap and disingenuousness. Maybe instead of whingeing endlessly about fictional characters on the internet you should try getting a life for once, gaylord'. And then Boo clutched the sides of his head, tearing at his hair, and then all at once collapsed to the ground, wailing in pure existential horror*)

"Wonderfalls" (complete series) - It's early-2000s Fox, & it's not the Simpsons or American Idol, so you know (a) it's good, and (b) it was aired out of order & cancelled prematurely.
The writing is smart & imaginative & gripping. The cast is great. It's got a unique style (but then, I never saw much Pushing Daisies). Much recommended for all o' y'all.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

New episode of Game Grumps----------'Goldeneye 007', featuring special guests Paul F. Tompkins and Tim Baltz

...you know, American television doesn't really do panel comedy shows like Britain does. Like, there was 'What's My Line' and 'Hollywood Squares' once upon a time, we got our own version of 'Who's Line' (inferior to the British version, IMHO), but there isn't really an American counterpart to 'Countdown', or '8 out of 10 Cats'. No WILTY? or QI, no Buzzcocks, no Big Fat Quiz. I liked the 'Colbert Report', but it wasn't quite 'Mock the Week', was it. Just...listening to comedians play off each other, riff off each other...it can be incredible.

And so I'm kind of glad we at least got dumb internet things like Game Grumps and Achievement Hunter, and OneyPlays, and DawnSomewhere, to sort of fill in the gap. It isn't perfect, but it's ours, dangit. And not to be patriotic or anything, but unlike them stinkin redcoats, we didnt need no socialist BBC-ass government funding to get it! Yeah! America! Girls' Generation x Phantasia x 4th Tour in Seoul

A lot of fun. Way better concert movie than the very disappointing Phantasia in Japan, though I think the Korean shows were earlier in the tour than the Japan shows. They can still put on a great show 10 years into their career. Actually this was two years ago, so 8 years.

Yes this is a concert movie but I'm a mod here and I'll post whatever I please and you can't do **** about it. Bitches.

Man. I think I must just be a closet Anglophile.

I hate game shows, but one of my favourite things is to watch a British panel comedy show. I can barely stand sitcoms, but I've got yonks of the British ones on DVD and Netflix queue. And now I find that, despite me despisin all the domestic Peoples Courtses, I could pretty much sit and watch Judge Rinder spit poison at rapscallions all day.

...I mean, if nothing else, it'd certainly explain my spelling.

Binged all of Pokémon Generations today. I've been meaning to and I finally got around to it.

It's no Pokémon Adventures, but I really enjoyed how it showcases bits of the lore/story/characters here and there in each gen rather than just running through the overarching stories of the games for a millionth time. I also really liked that Silver got an episode, that one was really sweet.

10/10 because of how much Looker was in it. (I really REALLY wish there were subs of the Japanese version though. The English dub is so bad. I ended up just watching the Japanese vids and making informed assumptions as to what was going on lmao)
