Earlier this week came the announcement that Netflix is developing a “Castlevania” animated TV series to be released later this year. Now “Dredd” and “The Grey” producer Adi Shankar has spoken about the project with Collider, saying the series has a “Game of Thrones vibe to it”.
The 31-year-old video game series follows Belmont clan’s battle with Dracula, which has been ongoing for centuries. The series sees Shankar teaming with “Adventure Time” executive producer Fred Seibert and famed comic author Warren Ellis (“Planetary,” “Transmetropolitan”).
Shankar says it will break the streak of bad video game adaptations: “I’m personally guaranteeing that this is going to be the best f–king video game adaptation ever made to date. I’ve seen it, and it’s f–king amazing.” The new show is reportedly very violent, akin to the likes of “Akira,” HBO’s “Spawn” and “Young Justice”.
Ellis reportedly wrote everything – two four-part seasons, with each episode being 30 minutes long: “You know how most TV shows have writers rooms and stuff? This one doesn’t. Warren just wrote all the scripts. It’s totally his voice. He’s amazing.”
The first season of “Castlevania” hits the streaming service later this year. The second in 2018.

Yu-Gi-Oh is a big money-making franchise, but a bulk of the money and creative decisions come from outside video games. All a game really needs to do is adapt the card game.
Bomberman was considered dead just two months ago, and the new Switch game is being made possible only because some former Hudson employees pushed for it. Compare this to Castlevania, where the main series producer of the last few years of the series life, IGA, has left the company and is working on his own project. In essence, I believe this has led to a Mega Man-esque situation, where there is no producer or creative force within the company pushing for a new game to be made. (this is also probably somewhat true of Metroid, but there it's more a case of a producer pushing for a game the fans don't really want) A new Castlevania is certainly possible, but I doubt it will happen.
edit: The development of a tie-in game also sounds doubtful to me due to the cartoon's target audience and platform.
I'm optimistic, at least partially because there may be hope for some decent Castlevania games still.
maybe it'll be a game based on the show based on the game
like that one horrible Street Fighter game that was based on the Street Fighter movie, specifically.
