Underrated Disney movies.

The Disney Canon has many wonderful movies to choose from, some of which are less known than the Beauty and the Beasts or the Little Mermaids.

Do you have any Disney movies that you feel are overlooked?

Well, are we talking 'overlooked' or 'underrated'? They're two different things, right.

Like, 'Sword in the Stone' doesn't get much attention these days. Nor 'Robin Hood', 'The Great Mouse Detective', or 'The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad'. Maybe they're too far out of the current mould (e.g. non-traditional protagonist, nothing to exploit for the Disney Princess line, no pointless comic-relief characters). Actually, a lot of them old 'package' flicks are hardly mentioned at all these days (only ones I've ever heard mentioned by someone outside my family were 'Saludos Amigos' and 'Three Caballeros').

As for 'underrated'...'Black Cauldron' gets kicked around a lot more than it deserves. Not to say it's some masterpiece without flaw, but I'd rather watch it than some garbage like 'Aristocats'.

I'd love to put "Song of the South" here to be controversial but I've never seen it, though I read it got an Oscar for "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah”. I somehow know the tune, it is pretty catchy.

My real answer is "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." It wasn't as good as the original trilogy by any means but it was still decent. I'd like another.

^'Pirates 5' appears to be on its way (Jay and Mike from RLM mention it in their 'F**k You, It's January! 2017' video, which came out just today).

It's strange to me that Disney has more or less thoroughly hucked 'Song of the South' out the door, yet has seen fit to retain Splash Mountain, a ride based on and featuring characters and music from the film.

You know, Disney released archival DVD copies of a lot of its early work about thirteen years back. Old Oswald the Rabbit shorts, all the Silly Symphonies, even their Swamp Fox show. All of them featured numerous disclaimers saying that the contents were a product of their times, and that while modern-day audiences might consider some of it offensive, Disney thought it would be dishonest to censor the products or pretend they never existed. And so one must ask-----------why no home video release of 'Song of the South'? Kind of think it's better to learn from the past than sweep it under the carpet.

Like, you can walk into a shop and buy a really, really nice copy of 'Birth of a Nation', or 'Triumph of the Will', but if you want 'Song of the South', you have to get a bootleg copy online, like it's a snuff film or something.

^Birth of a Nation is in the public domain; any schmuck who has a copy can sell more copies. (And both it & Triumph of the Will are historically significant; the Communist Manifesto is easily obtainable for the same reason, even--ironically--from staunch capitalists.) Disney still owns the rights to Song of the South, so they can keep it under lock & key as long as they want, even though it is a far less offensive & more enjoyable film.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Well, that's a problem, man. Disney is willing to acknowledge its faults on the one hand (e.g. putting out all its racist content with disclaimers), but wants to keep 'Song of the South' up its sleeve as though it's something to be horribly ashamed of.

It really isn't. It's an okay movie. People talk sh*t about it because they don't know (or pretend not to know) the context. Like, I'd rather watch 'Mary Poppins' or 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks' with the kids, but that doesn't make 'Song of the South' bad.
