Keanu - 6.5/10
Pretty run-of-the-mill comedic foil duo action movie, with a cat. Key and Peele can be funny but I wasn't exactly slapping my knees laughing at this one.
The Girl on the Train - 5/10
Murder mystery about a girl on a train. You read the title and you've pretty much seen the movie.
The Accountant -6/10
Action thriller about an autistic savant who does shady work with money laundering and stuff. Cool original idea, and honestly Ben Affleck played the character very well, but for the most part it's just your typical action movie.
The Martian - 9.5/10
I just finished the book so thought I'd watch this again. Still really good. The likable protagonist who acts very human in his situation is pretty much what makes the movie, and seeing pretty much all of humanity working together to save one person gives the movie a very feel-good atmosphere. Plus, you know, the science-y stuff is cool too.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back - 5/10
I'll be honest, I fell asleep several times during this movie. Take that for what you will.
Arrival - 9.5/10
A science fiction thriller about aliens visiting Earth. The cool thing is that there's no action or fighting or anything, it's just humanity and the aliens figuring out how to communicate to each other, and finding out what the aliens want, and man is it great. It hits all the logical and philosophical points and keeps you guessing throughout. Basically, imagine Contact or Sphere if they made sense.
Doctor Strange - 8.5/10
A nice addition to the MCU, Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange is a good fit. It's a good movie, although honestly it pretty much follows the same formula as every other Marvel movie, only with magic and trippy effects. It doesn't really do anything new. Still, definitely worth watching.
It Follows - 8/10
I don't watch a whole lot of scary movies, not cause I'm too scared, but cause I usually don't find them scary. Most are cheap, campy, and rely too much on jump scares. This however, was a breath of fresh air, it was genuinely anxiety-inducing and focused more on the terror rather than the horror. Heck, it starts to get you in the mindset of the main character after a while. Every time you see a person walking in the background of the movie you think "oh god, is that it?" Pretty freaky, I liked it.
The Babadook - 8.5/10
Two good scary movies in a row, how did I get so lucky? So, yeah, this is a horror movie, but there's hardly any "horror". It relies solely on dread, and fear of the unknown. You don't see the monster, you don't even know if it's real. It never pops out to scare you, there's no violence or gore. And yet, my heart was pounding through the entire thing. THIS is how you do a scary movie. Atmosphere, creepiness, intensity. And, without spoiling too much, it's actually a really good metaphor for grief. Therapeutic, even.
