Movies: 94/46

What If [aka The F Word] (21 Oct): A-. More com-rom than rom-com, & it has Harry Potter match wits with Kylo Ren.
Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (22 Oct): B. Let's not pretend this isn't Tim Burton's take on X-Men.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
Have you read the book? It's based off of old trick-photos the author found at garage sales. It's not really based off of X-Men, but off the photos.

Haven't read the book, but I knew it existed (& the trick-photo thing is a gag in the film). Dat title tho.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Ghostbusters (OG) (31 Oct): A-
Doctor Strange (6 Nov): A. Top-tier MCU entry.
The Polar Express (11 Nov): B
Crossroads (11 Nov): D. Sometimes my ladyfriend puts our love to the test.
An American Girl: McKenna Shoots for the Stars (13 Nov): C+. Harmless, cute, cheaply made, badly paced.

Gonna review the 7 Detective Conan movies I watched last weekend:
 • The Time-Bombed Skyscraper - 7/10 EXPLOSIONS **** YEEEAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Plus sick skateboard chase scenes as always. Also tfw the bomber did it for the aesthetic. Literally. "You couldn't possibly understand my aesthetics..." ok there dude man. Also, points for introducing Detective "What Do You Mean You Don't Recognize Me I've Totally Always Been Here" Shiratori, movie OC who like 5 years later made it into the manga as a canon character.
 • The Fourteenth Target - 5/10 meh. I mean, it's enjoyable because stuff explodes and there are murders, but not on the same level as other Conan movies IMO.
 • The Last Wizard of the Century - 8/10. I love this movie. Kaitou Kid is in it, for starters; but also the bulletproof glasses was incredibly stupid, but in a great way. The Rule of Cool prevails here as it does in all Conan movies and for that I am grateful. Agasa lowkey hacking into Interpol because of this NEWFANGLED INTERNET?? This movie is gold. (I also thought the plotline with Kaito's dove was really sweet.)
 • Countdown to Heaven - 10/10 SO GOOD. Black Organization? Check. Explosions? Check. Murders? Check. SICK SKATEBOARD PARKOUR?? YOU BET YOUR ASS THAT'S A CHECK. I'm just gonna skateboard across the 50-foot gap between these two buildings lmao. And THEN drive a car OUT OF AN EXPLODING BUILDING and use the explosion to propel it. Plus Ran got to be an action hero rather than a damsel for once in her damn life... RULE OF COOL FOLKS, THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME. (Timing though.... came out in April 2001, and involves the bombing of a pair of skyscrapers named the "twin towers." Youch.)
 • The Phantom of Baker Street - 9/10 I love this movie. Definitely one of the best non-Black Organization / non-Kaitou Kid movies. Really like how it deals with identity and artificial intelligence - like, it's only one out of a zillion movies to tackle those themes, but I thought it was done really well. The 10-year-old social commentary is still painfully relevant. Also, the premise is just so good: Shinichi's dad wrote a VR self-insert Sherlock Holmes game where you take down Jack the Ripper, because there's nothing as cathartic as rewriting history to also involve your husbando. Also wtf, anime Jack the Ripper is hot.
 • Crossroad in the Ancient Capital - 6.5/10 Most of this movie was eh, but the rooftop swordfight at the end on an ancient castle that's on fire was rad as hell and largely made up for it. Conan pulled some Prince of Persia **** with the arrows too, that was hella cool. It's also necessary to appreciate the GOD-AWFUL CGI MOTORCYCLE CHASE SCENES.... of which there are not one, but two. Gods all bless.
 • Strategy Above the Depths - 7/10 good movie. Really liked the epic Kogoro/Conan team-up at the end. Also, this was the first movie to successfully throw a red herring with the gadget explanations at the start - all of the previous movies start off with "AND HERE IS A DETAILED EXPLANATION OF ALL OF THE GADGETS SO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHICH ONES WILL BE RELEVANT!!" and this one made it a point to talk about how their watches have flashlights that work underwater.... which never made it into the movie. I spent the whole time waiting for some underwater search because they explained it at the beginning so it must happen, but it didn't. Only took them like 9 movies but they learned their lesson about the gadgets finally.
The blimp movie is still hands down the best one, but I'll be damned if I don't love every single Conan movie ever made.
I believe in second chances, and that's why I believe in you.

The Legend of Tarzan - 7/10
The Infiltrator - 8/10
Unfriended - 6.5/10
Mad Max: Fury Road -10/10
Keanu - 6.5/10
Pretty run-of-the-mill comedic foil duo action movie, with a cat. Key and Peele can be funny but I wasn't exactly slapping my knees laughing at this one.

The Girl on the Train - 5/10
Murder mystery about a girl on a train. You read the title and you've pretty much seen the movie.

The Accountant -6/10
Action thriller about an autistic savant who does shady work with money laundering and stuff. Cool original idea, and honestly Ben Affleck played the character very well, but for the most part it's just your typical action movie.

The Martian - 9.5/10
I just finished the book so thought I'd watch this again. Still really good. The likable protagonist who acts very human in his situation is pretty much what makes the movie, and seeing pretty much all of humanity working together to save one person gives the movie a very feel-good atmosphere. Plus, you know, the science-y stuff is cool too.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back - 5/10
I'll be honest, I fell asleep several times during this movie. Take that for what you will.

Arrival - 9.5/10
A science fiction thriller about aliens visiting Earth. The cool thing is that there's no action or fighting or anything, it's just humanity and the aliens figuring out how to communicate to each other, and finding out what the aliens want, and man is it great. It hits all the logical and philosophical points and keeps you guessing throughout. Basically, imagine Contact or Sphere if they made sense.

Doctor Strange - 8.5/10
A nice addition to the MCU, Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange is a good fit. It's a good movie, although honestly it pretty much follows the same formula as every other Marvel movie, only with magic and trippy effects. It doesn't really do anything new. Still, definitely worth watching.

It Follows - 8/10
I don't watch a whole lot of scary movies, not cause I'm too scared, but cause I usually don't find them scary. Most are cheap, campy, and rely too much on jump scares. This however, was a breath of fresh air, it was genuinely anxiety-inducing and focused more on the terror rather than the horror. Heck, it starts to get you in the mindset of the main character after a while. Every time you see a person walking in the background of the movie you think "oh god, is that it?" Pretty freaky, I liked it.

The Babadook - 8.5/10
Two good scary movies in a row, how did I get so lucky? So, yeah, this is a horror movie, but there's hardly any "horror". It relies solely on dread, and fear of the unknown. You don't see the monster, you don't even know if it's real. It never pops out to scare you, there's no violence or gore. And yet, my heart was pounding through the entire thing. THIS is how you do a scary movie. Atmosphere, creepiness, intensity. And, without spoiling too much, it's actually a really good metaphor for grief. Therapeutic, even.

^The new parts of Strange: The villains have a unique motive, the villains are outsmarted rather than outgunned*, the next villain is set up to have a unique motive also, a Stark-type hero actually learns his dang lesson right away, the love interest is never damseled**, & the Asgardian "magic is just science" rule is broken. Also, overarching plot-wise:
O hai Time Stone--that's 5 down, 1 to go.
*
'Cause the latter is impossible
**
And they don't end up together
Movies: 106/46

Get a Job (19 Nov): B-. There's some good stuff here, but there's some crap weighing it down.
Odd Thomas (23 Nov): B+. Pacing issues aside, it's a strong & unusual twist on modern supernatural stuff.
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (24 Nov): B+. Please stop talking, Hermey.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"
