I'm laughing bc my crack explanation for Majin Buu in the future was exactly what apparently actually happened.

Thinking back to the Goku VS Trunks fight, it was cool, I liked how Goku did his finger block thing again, but the power scaling was off. SSj3 Goku was nothing compared to Beerus in their first fight but after attaining SSjG he was able to keep up with him after it wore off as just SSj/SSj2. So if they now have SSj2 Trunks on par with SSj2 Goku it doesn't really make sense because that would put Trunks over SSj3 Goku (pre-SSjG). Trunks had a hard time against Dabura by his own admission, someone Goku should be able to easily beat in base form or SSj1 so it just doesn't add up.

I guess it can be brushed under the rug as Goku not trying despite the transformation he was in, that's the only way that makes sense.

But that's the thing, he shouldn't need to go past SSj1, and certainly not SSj3.

SSj3 Goku (before he got the SSjG boost) was helpless against Beerus like Mystic Gohan and everyone else was (SSj2 Vegeta at least did something but it wasn't much despite being more than anyone else could do). So the tiers pretty much went like this before the SSjG Ritual:

Beerus > SSj2 Vegeta > Everyone else (Goku & Gohan included)

Goku fought Beerus a second time after the SSjG Ritual as a SSjG. He was on par with him (while he was still secretly holding back) in SSjG but then the form expired. However, despite that he retained the power of the form which allowed him to still fight Beerus as a SSj1. This means current Goku's SSj1 trumps even his own SSj3 form from just a few episodes prior, as well as Gohan and Vegeta, all of whom should be able to kill Dabura with zero effort (even SSj2 Gohan was on par with Dabura and he was basically regarded as a weakling by Goku and Vegeta at that point) but yet SSj2 Trunks had trouble with him.

So the question becomes, if SSj2 Trunks is equal to SSj2 Goku who is vastly beyond Dabura's level, then why did Trunks have any difficulty with him? It's something you'd really have to analyze to see it, but at least Goku looked like he was toying with him so it can just be chalked up to that.

DBZ has always done a pretty damn good job of keeping the Power Levels balanced but ever since Resurrection of F and its Dragon Ball Super arc things have been sort of muddy. It's mostly just me being in nerd overdrive mode but it is somewhat irksome.

I'm pretty sure Toriyama doesn't actually care.

If anything power levels only existed to throw the idea that they are the strongest back in the enemy's face narrative wise (and also foreshadow something about Frieza).

^^^ to humor this argument (rather than just saying "clearly the writers don't give a **** so we shouldn't either"), I think we can assume he struggled against Dabura years prior, and his exponential growth began when facing Black. He said Black became stronger with every fight, so I think over the year of fighting him Trunks also must have gotten stronger. It looks like there's a large time gap between Dabura and Black, it's safe to assume he got (significantly, evidently) stronger between fighting Dabura and coming back to the main timeline.

((You can't call it "back to the past" anymore because at this point he's not just going to the past, but a different past than his, since the two timelines have LONG since diverged at this point))

^ While it's possible Trunks has become that much stronger it is very unlikely. Such a huge, unexplained boost would be odd. It's one thing for Cabba to come out of nowhere with great power, we don't know anything about him, but Trunks was comparatively weak last we saw him and even during his flashback with Dabura his power was still low. Why he'd suddenly get so much stronger with the SSjG Ritual is strange. Even fighting against Black can't really explain it since fighting the Androids didn't yield such a power boost.

Probably comes down to the writers caring less than us about it, haha.
