Star Trek explores next frontier in 2017

Los Angeles: The iconic science fiction franchise Star Trek will go boldly once more.

The US studio CBS has commissioned a new Star Trek television series, which will launch in January, 2017. The series will serve as a flagship drama for the studio's US-based paid streaming platform, CBS All Access.

CBS confirmed it would air the pilot episode on the CBS network, but the series would premiere new weekly episodes on the streaming platform.

...

No details have been released about the show's characters or story, but CBS has confirmed it will not be directly connected to the existing Star Trek films.

The announcement comes as CBS prepares for the 50th anniversary of Star Trek; the original series launched in September, 1966.

...

The planned series will be the seventh Star Trek television series, descending from a lineage which began with what is now known as Star Trek: The Original Series, which aired between 1966 and 1969.

Awesome news, looking forward to learning more. At this time though my excitement is directed at the fan movie being made Star Trek: Axanar, the next official movie, and then this new series last.

My only fear is if I watch this and like it Star Trek fanboys (and also my mom) are going to start quizzing me on my (lack of) knowledge of all the old series and I'm going to be a Fake Geek Girl

totes gonna watch it anyway

uhhh, you got two years, here

go watch the old ones

heck, you don't have to watch all of any of them--------smattering of each, plus all the TOS flicks, 'Generations' and 'First Contact', and you should be fine

(need recommendations, I'm your boy-------promise only about 20% of the episodes I tell you to watch will be horrible

i must be cruel only to be kind)

^^^^ Just watch TNG, DS9, and maybe Voyager, plus the movies (the TNG ones and new ones). Should be sufficient.

First episode of TNG is good. Introduces Q right off the bat, and his episodes are among the best.

shush, you. ;)

And I'll have to second what IRHP said: Watch the first episode of TNG. Then go down that path. TNG is really good (although I'm sort of biased because I adore Jean-Luc Picard). I also enjoyed DS9 but I'm in the minority--most people don't like DS9... and people like Voyager even less. But then again, to each their own.

Well, what are you keen on, Loot?

I mean, there's really good eps in each of the first three shows. (I can't in good conscience recommend any of VOY, as it kind of sucks, or ENT, as it really sucks.)

Let's start with TNG with something very... action-y.

"Enterprise" had two redeeming factors:
1) A paycheck for Scott Bakula
2) A Quantum Leap reunion

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Well, what's your familiarity level? I mean, if you know the show a bit, it's pretty hard to beat 'Best of Both Worlds'. For a complete novitiate...maybe you'd do well to begin at the beginning---------'Encounter at Farpoint' is pretty solid. Good introduction to all the characters. Longtime series foil Q puts in first appearance, and is primary adversary in episode. Fair bit of action. Not a bad place to start.
