Rebooting old shows.

Rebooting old cartoons/shows is very popular these days, cashing in on people's nostalgia.

I see it as a double-edged sword. On one hand, you have a built-in audience of people's nostalgia, and a chance to bring an IP to a new generation. On the other, people who grew up with the show/cartoon often complain about how different the reboot is from the original.

What do you think? Is it good, or should they focus on making new ideas?

As long as the show is good, I don't particularly care whether the IP is new or old.

Been watching Dragon Ball Super every week since it was released. There have been like 16 episodes so far. They vary in quality, one had particularly bad animation for some reason while another had a cringe inducing scene...and many were just stretched out like crazy, but it's far more noticeable than DBZ and not at interesting.

It hasn't been all bad, but so far has not lived up to the BotG movie it's retelling. Hopefully the Golden Frieza saga is done better, but I know it will really kick the quality into overdrive once they are finished with retelling these movies.

So I dunno. Rebooting things is dangerous because it can tarnish what exists. Think of adding a room to a house but its craftsmanship is sh*t, lowering the overall value of the house. I think it's worth taking the risk in most cases, and I think that if something is really good that it can survive a misstep.

The first thing that immediately comes to mind for me is Teen Titans Go, and then I get angry.

But obviously the original series is arguably a reboot of the origin comics, so like, who's to say? I guess for me if you're gonna reboot something keep in mind what was appealing about the original and avoid completely scrapping that if you want to not piss off old fans. But old fans are going to get pissed regardless so if you have something new to bring then go for it I guess

As for me personally I'm usually hard to please if there's a reboot of something I love. It has to be either SO different and unique that I don't think of them in contrast with one another, or a true spiritual successor.

Look up Power/Rangers Unauthorized. It's corny but shows promise as a concept. I could imagine it working as a feature length film. A lot of adults would go see it for sure, especially if they managed to make it R Rated. PG-13 would just alienate little kids and adults, so you'd have a theater full of edgy 12 year olds.

They're already making an official MMPR reboot movie; it's due out in 2017.

The most recent reboot I remember that was actually good was the Thundercats cartoon from 2011.

There's also franchises like Scooby-Doo and Transformers which reboot every 5-10 years but I dunno if that counts.

It appears MST3K is getting rebooted. Joel Hodgson put together a KickStarter, and it achieved its goal a couple days back. No idea what all of the cast/writers/crew is returning (if any); Mike, Kevin and Bill got their RiffTrax steez, who knows what the rest of them are up to these days.

I'm cool with it. One presumes Joel will keep things on track.

^Joel said he's going to invite all of the old cast & writers to write for the new episodes if they want, but that he wants to go with a new cast (he won't even act in the episodes himself).

...well, to a point.

I kind of don't want to hear some weird voice coming out of Tom Servo. I know Kevin was himself a replacement voice, but I think the role is rightly his, now. Like, if Kevin isn't available, make a new bot, I say. New character entirely. Like why not.

Like, change the lead again, by all means. Have someone else voice Crow (or, hell, see if Trace Beaulieu wants to do it again). Let whoever can manage a doofy falsetto voice Gypsy. But as for Tom...it's Kevin or nothing, far as I'm concerned.
