White-washing the Stonewall

#1

Post by LOOT » Mon Aug 10, 2015 4:12 am

Brief histrory: Stonewall refers to the series of events involving activists protesting police in New York in 1969. Most importantly this was stated to be started by brick-throwing against the police from various members and it was started by-

Well apparently according to the movie coming out next month, a young cisgender gay man.

Image

Why stop there, why not make him bisexual or hey, bicurious. Why not just make this 100% fictional character an ally?! Ally to Hero, the new slogan for Stonewall.

Well this is the kicker: the real initiators of Stonewall wasn't him. There were two individuals credited with sparking the movement that set LBGT surges all over.

Image

Marsha P. Johnson, a transwoman and drag queen, was the one who started it first and is credited for assisting many queer people at the time.

Image

There is also Sylvia Rivera, a Puerto Rican transgender woman, also pivotal in the movement.

They are not cisgender gay men. This is a huge example of bastardizing movements against discrimination, much like how they portray Rosa Parks as "a tired elderly woman" when she was actually a huge contender in civil rights long before the bus ride.

The director's claim that they're including all identities is a load of bull crap, especially when the main character is white and cis.

note: Any comments about the image/looks of the two women I posted are banned. Keep that **** out of this topic, this is about the 2015 movie and its whitewashing and transphobic actions.

Moviemakers love to put conventionally attractive 20-something white men in as many roles as possible. Presumably because that's what sells. But jeez you couldn't pick a worse topic to do it with.

Huh.

These two aren't even mentioned in the main casting. In fact...
What? Orphan Annie, what?!

I really don't care about movies from large studios made from history. They almost never give any of it the seriousness it deserves and drag it down with cliche nonsense. I'm already getting bad vibes from this one and the guy from England playing the lead.

Disappointing, but unfortunately not surprising at all.

A black and a Latino starting a riot would just get it called racist, even if it actually happened that way. Someone is almost guaranteed to. Luckily, Hollywood has solved this problem by making the main character white. We must all bow to their wisdom.
The man who is blind, deaf, and silent lives in peace.

apparently the director has seen all these comments already and had the following to say

Hollywood has always been awful with stuff like this. More recently Exodus: Gods and Kings and especially way back in the day in the 50's and 60's. In the movie Around the World in 80 Days, Shirley Maclaine plays an Indian princess. wut.

I've heard that when pitching movies there's always people in suits telling you what to do and what not to do. I feel like Roland and this Irvine guy's insistence that the film is okay is just being tied to the leash of the producers who basically lay down the rules for what should be on film based on numbers and figures.

^^ Having diversity and featuring important figures (if they even do so as prominently as they claim) is no excuse for casting a white cis gay dudebro at the center of a movement that was led by not white trans people. These people repeatedly get swept out of the limelight, even in movies about the movements they started. sigh

Also Loot you keep making statements that imply bisexuals aren't "gay enough" and it's really tiring to be honest

I can... live with "white dudebro from England" as the protagonist. If he can act it'll work out.

I'm more concerned that the main cast mentions no one from the actual protest. No historical figures or anything. If you're afraid to go through with this piece of history than why are you attaching it to history at all?

I think the worst part is that this is probably going to have a happy ending when the riots were only the start of a bigger cultural movement. Not good or bad. I'm not expecting any better from the one that directed "2012".

I was going off of media's tendency of "bi but always in a straight relationship in the end" but my apologies I did not mean to make it sound otherwise.

And you could help the homeless in general, too.
