I really wanted to hate Jurassic World, I wanted to hate it so badly. I was ready to sit through a modern Hollywood bastardization of my favorite movie, full of bad CGI, loud incoherent action, and cringe-worthy humor. Never have I been so glad to be wrong, it somehow managed to be awesome down to the last second. It's certainly not as smart or impactful as Jurassic Park, but as far as summer blockbusters go, it did just about everything right.

Kingsman was a solid spy-action movie that was way more violent than I expected, though I probably should've since it's from the same dude that did Kick-Ass. Fun stuff. Entourage was a really long episode of the TV show Entourage, but not like the early seasons where it was kinda okay and could be seen as a satire of Hollywood life, but the later seasons where it's super predictable and nothing interesting happens. Jurassic World really disappointed me, honestly. I had fun during the movie, but so much of it was in the **** trailers that until the raptor-motorcycle scene I felt like I had already seen the movie. Also product placement was really distracting and holy cliches Batman. I'd probably recommend the movie still, but solely as a rental or if it's like at a budget theater. In the meantime if you want to see a blockbuster action movie on the big screen, just see Mad Max twelve more times before it leaves theaters.
and that's the waaaaaaaaaay the news goes

2/40
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Feb 21) - 4/5
Jurassic World (Jun 14) - 3/5

The special effects were cool of course, though the story was predictable, and the romantic subplot was just lame.

Took Sister, River and Maxy to the movies today. (I'm a doting uncle. It is encumbent on me to spoil the lot of them every so often, dangit.)

Movies 8/40-----------

Big Hero 6 - 01/01/15 - 10/10
The Birdman - 01/04/15 - 10+/10
The Grand Budapest Hotel - 01/21/15 - 10/10
Margot the Furnace - 03/12/15 - 7/10
The Book of Life - 05/26/15 - 6/10
Disney's Hercules - 05/31/15 - 7/10
Mortdecai - 06/01/15 - 9/10
Inside Out - 06/22/15 - 8/10

Fun flick. Last Pixar movie I saw was 'Toy Story 3' (last Pixar movie I actually enjoyed was 'Up') (ahahahahaa--------sick burn, boo, self-high five) and this was a nice return to form. Odd, but coherent----it felt right.

(EDIT:...probably not the best flick to take little kiddie-winkies to. I mean, I don't doubt children will like it (River and Max seemed to), but I'm not sure they'll entirely understand it. Like, there's some pretty abstract stuff going on, and some pretty heavy biz, too. I don't know.

Boo stumbles across things sometimes.

Movies 9/40-----------

Big Hero 6 - 01/01/15 - 10/10
The Birdman - 01/04/15 - 10+/10
The Grand Budapest Hotel - 01/21/15 - 10/10
Margot the Furnace - 03/12/15 - 7/10
The Book of Life - 05/26/15 - 6/10
Disney's Hercules - 05/31/15 - 7/10
Mortdecai - 06/01/15 - 9/10
Inside Out - 06/22/15 - 8/10
Khumba - 06/22/15 - 7.5/10

Weird independent CGI deal with cartoon zebras. Sudafrikaaner production company. High production values--------animation and music were top-notch, they even got some celebrity VAs (most notably Steve Buscemi, Lawrence Fishburne and Liam 'The Champ' Neeson). Writing wasn't fantastic--------I mean, for all that there weren't any atrocious pop-culture references, the story was pretty cliche, the characters very familiar. For all that, though, I enjoyed it. It was kind of doofy, but earnest and exuberant and likeable. Like a golden retriever.

Rather watch this with River and Maxy than 'Madagascar 5' or whatever, tell you that for free.

3/40
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Feb 21) - 4/5
Jurassic World (Jun 14) - 3/5
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Jun 25) - 4/5

I think I liked this better than the first one. Though...

Is inflation not a thing in Middle Earth? This is like a hundred Fort Knoxes, never mind the seemingly solid-gold giant statue at the end, all apparently amassed by a moderately-sized mountain kingdom.

Alfrid truly is the Jar-Jar of this prequel trilogy.

Also stop your whining Tauriel, you met the guy like two days ago.

Horrible Bosses 2 was a fine drunk movie, as in that I could stop paying attention to large chunks and still laugh at some of the jokes. Not nearly as good as the first Horrible Bosses. Fifty Shades we thought it would be fun to make fun of, but really it was just an uncomfortable experience because Christian Grey is such an awful, creepy character. Inside Out was really fun and cute and I'm thinking about seeing it again.

I'm on fire.

Movies 10/40-----------

Big Hero 6 - 01/01/15 - 10/10
The Birdman - 01/04/15 - 10+/10
The Grand Budapest Hotel - 01/21/15 - 10/10

Inside Out - 06/22/15 - 8/10
Khumba - 06/22/15 - 7.5/10
Home - 06/26/15 - 8/10

...it was a lot cleverer and less obnoxious than the trailers let on. I concede the aliens' Starfire-ass speech patterns got a little tiresome after a while, but it was good, as a whole. And the kids seemed to like it.

*Minions (Pierre Coffin & Kyle Balda, 2015) - 7/13/15 - C
*Ant-Man (Peyton Reed, 2015) - 7/19/15 - B/B+

The Inbetweeners Movie was just like a long episode of the TV shows, but one of the less funny episodes and also the ending sucks. High Fidelity was delightful and I don't know how I hadn't seen it before now. I like both Despicable Me films, but Minions was unnecessary even though there are some really cute/funny moments. Needed more of the animated corgis. Ant-Man is a fun movie, but Peyton Reed definitely isn't the director Edgar Wright would've been for this movie. It's a good time but some of the pacing seems weird and it seems like scenes change on a whim because **** it. Also TOTALLY unnecessary fight scene featuring a previous Marvel movie character that's obviously just there for no other reason than HEY LOOK GUYS
and that's the waaaaaaaaaay the news goes

Ant-Man (24 Jul) - 7/10
Agreed with Panny's assessment about the pacing & transitions, but elsewise a very fun film. Interestingly, it came with the first Fantastic Four trailer that's actually managed to make that movie look at least a tiny bit enjoyable.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Fantastic Four (2015) - 2/10

I don't think I've ever watched a more dull, soulless movie than Fantastic Four, it actually makes me feel depressed just thinking about it. It's like they wanted to make a superhero movie but forgot to put superheroes in it, or... make a movie, for that matter. It's like a 100-minute trailer for a movie that never happens. There is no plot, there is no pacing, there's no character, there is no FUN.

Like, here's the whole movie (spoilers just to be safe but I'm really not doing you any disservice):
Reed builds a machine to travel to a different planet, then oops we got superpowers what should we do... Use them to fight crime and stuff? NO, let's do LITERALLY NOTHING but stay in the lab and mope about it for the rest of the movie. Oh I guess now the government wants to use us (which they never show other than a 3 second recording on a tv screen of the Thing destroying a tank), until... DR. DOOM APPEARS except it's not Dr. Doom it's just a metal guy that glows green. He wants to destroy the world for no reason so let's stop him by attacking him one at a time for a few minutes. yay we win kay guise we're the fantastc 4 nao, THE END
Haven't updated this in quite a while... the viewing dates on some of these are estimates.

Movies with an asterisk in front are ones I've seen before.
1. * Election (Alexander Payne, 1999) - January 1 - Late 90s comedy classic. Love it.
2. Himizu (Sion Sono, 2011) - January 2 - Great film, but not quite as great as everyone says.
3. I Saw the Devil (Kim Jee-woon, 2010) - January 3 - Most disturbing movie I've ever seen. I still liked it though.
4. For the Love of Movies: The Story of American Film Criticism (Gerald Peary, 2009) - January 5 - Decent documentary. Nothing mind-blowing.
5. The French Connection (William Friedkin, 1971) - January 15 - Not necessarily the best, but still a great example of why the 1970s is my favorite decade of American cinema.
6. Inherent Vice (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2014) - January 17 - The scenes of Joanna Newsom delivering the narration didn't work out as well, but other than that, this movie is **** fantastic. Can't wait to see it again.
7. Chinatown (Roman Polanski, 1974) - January 22 - Not the movie I was expecting it to be. Not better or worse than I expected, really, but just different. Good movie though.
8. Kingdom of Dreams and Madness - (Mami Sunada, 2013) - January 23 - Great look inside Studio Ghibli. Kind of makes me want to do more animation... which I haven't done in like 5 years now though.
9. * The Departed (Martin Scorsese, 2006) - February 5 - Leave it to Scorsese to do a remake of a foreign movie that actually almost reaches the quality of the original.
10. * Frances Ha (Noah Baumbach, 2012) - February 7 - I love this movie so much that any praise I give it will sound hyperbolic. But yeah. I relate to Greta Gerwig's eponymous character so much.
11.His Royal Slyness (Hal Roach, 1920) - February 13 - Not my favorite Harold Lloyd movie, but a solid film nonetheless.
12. * Infernal Affairs (Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, 2002) - February 15 - The movie The Departed was a remake of. As much as I like the remake, the original still edges it out.
13. * Happy End - (Jung Ji-woo, 1999) - February 20 - A landmark film of the beginning of the Korean Wave in cinema, it really bothered me to see such a great film advertised as some smutty sex romp on Amazon Prime and Hulu. Yes, there are a few sex scenes (which are cut significantly shorter in the Amazon Prime version to boot), but Happy End is a great film for its compelling drama, along with the performances of Jeon Do-yeon and Choi Min-sik. Also, for some odd reason even though Jeon's character is incredibly unsympathetic, I found myself liking her simply because she was played by Jeon Do-yeon, which was also kind of my reaction when I saw it the first time back in school. Probably not the most common reaction.
14. Boyhood - (Richard Linklater, 2014) - February 21 - Incredible. I wanted it to keep going. Along with The Tale of Princess Kaguya, one of the most astounding films from 2014 I've seen.
15. 3 Women - (Robert Altman, 1977) - February 25 - Surreal. Trippy. I liked it, and I feel like I'm definitely going to be watching this one again sometime in the near future.
16. Russian Ark - (Alexander Sokurov, 2002) - March 4 - I think I respect this movie more than I like it. Which isn't to say that I didn't like it, though. From a craft point of view, it's one of the most ambitious and impressive films I've seen, so I feel kind of bad saying that overall I just kind of mildly enjoyed it.
17. I Wish I Had a Wife (Park Heung-sik, 2001) - Enjoyable, if inconsequential. It has Jeon Do-yeon in it though.
18. Witness (Peter Weir, 1985) - March 11 - Solid, unique police procedural. Good, but not especially memorable
19. * Once Upon a Time in China (Tsui Hark, 1991) - March 15 - Classic in every sense of the word. Without question one of the best martial arts films ever made.
20. Life Itself (Steve James, 2014) - March 21 - About as good of a tribute to Roger Ebert as he deserves... in other words, a really damn good documentary.
21. Hoop Dreams (Steve James, 1994) - March 25 - Truly lives up to its reputation. Also, watching it during March Madness seems quite fitting.
22. * Mean Streets (Martin Scorsese, 1973) - March 26 - Martin **** Scorsese's breakthrough film. This was just a preview of the man who would eventually become the United States' best film director (fight me). You can see several of the his stylistic trademarks in nascent form here. A great film from a man who would go on to make several even better films.
23. * Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976) - March 28 - One of my top ten favorite movies ever made, period.
24. Panic Room (David Fincher, 2002) - March 29 - This movie came on TV without me intending to watch it, but I got sucked into it right away. Super intense. I'm not quite sure how I feel about the ending, but I liked it a lot overall.
25. The Wolf of Wall Street (Martin Scorsese, 2013) - March 29 - Martin Scorsese has made movies about some unseemly characters. Jordan Belfort might be the unseemliest. So is Leo getting that Oscar anytime soon?
26. * The Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola, 1972) - March 30 - Without question, one of the greatest films ever made. If you dare speak to the contrary, I may have to make you an offer you can't refuse.
27. Jane Eyre (Cary Fukanaga, 2011) - April 1 - Visually beautiful, but that's about all that really stuck with me. I can see why the story is so popular, but it's just not for me.
28. * Scarface (Brian De Palma, 1983) - April 25 - Ah, excessive cocaine and an entertainingly cartoonish performance from Al Pacino. Not as great as its legions of die-hard fans say it is, but still an enjoyable movie nonetheless.
29. * Scarface (Howard Hawks, 1932) - April 30 - Very different from the remake, but just about equal, I'd say. I love how there's a warning in the beginning of the movie that it's supposed to be a "serious, socially aware" movie about the dangers of the mafia... yeah, no. This was made for pure entertainment.
30. Interstellar (Christopher Nolan, 2014) - May 9 - I've never really been that big on Nolan, but this is the first movie I've seen of his that I really liked a lot.
31. * Serpico (Sidney Lumet, 1973) - May 20 - The 1970s "New Hollywood" era is one of my favorite decades in the history of cinema. This gritty film from Sidney Lumet is a shining example of why. Al Pacino truly captures the frustration the eponymous in trying to stamp out police corruption, a problem which still exists today.
32. Ex Machina (Alex Garland, 2015) - May 24 - I liked it well enough, but it didn't quite live up to the hype. The exploration of the possibilities of artificial intelligence was interesting, though.
33. Time is Illmatic (One9, 2014) - June 2 - An insightful and entertaining look into my all-time favorite album (Nas's Illmatic) and the life of the artist that inspired him to make it.
34. The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Him (Ned Benson, 2013) - June 3 - Interesting, but not especially memorable.
35. The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Her (Ned Benson, 2013) - June 15 - Definitely better than Him. I'm going to go out on a limb and say I actually liked this one.
36. The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them (Ned Benson, 2013) - June 24 - We thought this was supposed to be the movie you watch after Him and Her. We were wrong. This is the one you're supposed to watch first, so it kind of felt pointless, as all of the footage is in Him and Her.
37. * The 400 Blows (Francois Truffaut, 1959) - July 1 - Probably in my top 5 all time favorite movies, if it were possible for me to make such a list.
38. The Conformist (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1970) - July 8 - Eh. We tried to watch this movie last year and I fell asleep. This time I stayed awake, but I didn't find it especially interesting. I do like the gritty, 1970's feel of the film though.
39. * The Housemaid (Kim Ki-Young, 1960) - July 15 - Considered to be the high watermark of early Korean cinema, it truly lives up to its reputation. Watching it again makes the remake from 2011 even more disappointing.
40. * Tai Chi Master (Yuen Woo-ping, 1993) - July 21 - This actually used to be my favorite film for a while during my freshman year of college. I wouldn't consider it one of my favorites now, but I did still enjoy it years later. Solid Yuen Woo-Ping/Jet Li collaboration.
41. Big Trouble in Little China (John Carpenter, 1986) - July 22 - Campy. Fun. Offensive yellowface. I can see why it's a cult classic.
42. * Wing Chun (Yuen Woo-ping, 1994) - August 7 - Another old favorite from my freshman year of college. Such a fun film to watch, in spite of a few scenes that are kind of morally... iffy. It holds up better than Tai Chi Master.
43. Rosemary's Baby (Roman Polanski, 1968 ) - August 12 - This is... without question... not only the greatest horror film I've ever seen, but one of the greatest films I've ever seen, period. So brilliantly intense. It's almost as much a film noir as it is a horror film. It's so... surreal. Best movie I've seen for the first time this year.
44. * The Ceremony (Nagisa Oshima, 1971) - August 19 - Years ago, my last project for college before graduation was to make a Wikipedia page for this film. It's not as good as I remember, but I still enjoyed it.
45. Nightcrawler (Dan Gilroy, 2014) - August 26 - Has a passing resemblance to Taxi Driver, but not as much as I heard. That doesn't stop it from being a great movie, however. Jake Gyllenhaal's character is eeevvvviiiiillll...
46. Night of the Living Dead (George Romero, 1968 ) - August 30 - It was great to watch this groundbreaking horror film. I'm once again trying to get into watching the classics from the genre, and I feel like I can put a check mark on something that was long overdue.
47. House (Nobuhiko Obayasi, 1977) - September 2 - It totally lives up to its reputation as being one of the strangest movies ever made, but I honestly found it more interesting than enjoyable. It had some pretty neat moments in it, though.
48. * Evil Dead II (Sam Raimi, 1987) - September 5 - Without question one of the top horror/comedy hybrids of all time. It's like a live-action Looney Toons cartoon.
49. Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (Hiroshi Inagaki, 1954) - September 9 - Getting around to watching this trilogy again after like 6 years. It's a very commercial chanbara, but a very good one.
