I think everybody heard of this. Michael J. Fox almost died when he was hanged from his neck in Back To The Future Part III. He had to stand on top of a box but Robert Zemeckis thought it didn't look realistic enough so Fox decided to do it without the box, relying on careful hand placement. Something went wrong with the third take but nobody realized he was not acting until he passed out. And this was the shot they used.

This is how most crazy stuff that happens in filming ends up.

In The Fellowship of the Ring, Viggo Mortensen was almost stabbed by the actor Uruk-hai dude in the final fight. You know where he whips out his sword to deflect a knife thrown at him? Well, the Uruk-hai guy threw the knife closer than it was intended. Viggo just managed to swing on time and strike the knife. So that take is essentially Viggo almost getting stabbed and him unlocking his Jedi powers.

Did he do anything like those in the 3rd one?

It annoys me that I type in "return of the king" and the only result is the 1980's cartoon LOTR movie.
