I was actually surprised Birdman won. Not that I'm complaining at all - I effing loved that movie. But I was being cynical that American Sniper was going to win because this is 'Murica and guns and war.
I would have loved to see Keaton win the Oscar for Best Actor but I knew that Eddie guy was going to get it even though I haven't seen The Theory of Everything.

Michael Keaton is my favourite actor in the world. I hope he gets an Oscar some day. He has time. (Hell, even Peter O'Toole got an Oscar eventually, even if it was only a lifetime achievement award for being nominated seven hundred times and not winning once.) (I'm sure there's a reason he didn't win for 'The Lion in Winter'. I'm sure whoever won that year was better. I set my watch and warrant on it. Because if not, the entire world stops making sense to me.)
[EDIT:...I should go watch 'The Lion in Winter' right now. We all should, come to that. It's only the best movie I can think of. Like why not already.
[EDIT2: Currently watching 'Lion in Winter'. Don't know if I can manage it. The scene between Eleanor and Richard, when Eleanor angrily pulls out a pin and scratches her arm with it, and the Lionheart reacts with horror...it's terrible, and beautiful, and it hurts me. I love it and feel terror. It's dreadful and important, and barely one of the top ten scenes in the movie.
hooray for something good winning over the popular 'boyhood'-ass bullsh*t for once ever----------eat my ass, hollywood, you vile hive, you
Umm...
Grand Budapest Hotel:
Studio - Fox Searchlight Pictures
Budget - $30 million
Box Office - $174.6 million
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance):
Studio - Fox Searchlight Pictures
Budget - $16.5 million
Box Office - $76.7 million
Boyhood:
Studio - IFC Films
Budget - $4 million
Box office - $44.4 million
Boyhood lost precisely because it wasn't Hollywood enough. Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman both come from major studios with a huge amount of influence on awards ceremonies. Birdman also had the advantage of being a movie about Hollywood, which god knows the academy thinks is the best kind of film ever (see also: Argo, The Artist). The Oscars are approximately 10% about the quality of the film and 90% about who lobbies the hardest.
Let's not even get into the politics of the Best Animated Feature category... yuck. If you want to accurately predict the winner, just throw your dart at whatever crap Disney/Pixar puts out.

Even if Birdman is a "Hollywood" movie, I enjoyed how the frontrunners this year were genuinely intriguing films from more "visionary" directors like Innaritu, Linklater, and Anderson, when it seems like most years the Academy would've gone with usual biopic Oscarbait like The Theory of Everything. It seems really refreshing. I don't expect this to hold up though.
And of course it still shows some of the problems with the Academy like the importance of campaigning or Guild Awards over how good the film actually was (which it seems is one of the reasons why Selma received such little recognition)

and that's the waaaaaaaaaay the news goes

As much as I loved Big Hero 6 it winning doesn't mean anything because lets face it its only real contender was HTTYD2 (like any studio other than Disney, Pixar, or Dreamworks would ever win) and the judges didn't bother watching all of the nominees as usual so who cares
Tbh I'd like to see animated films just put up based on genre rather than lumped together bc is it really fair to pit BH6 against Kaguya anyway ??? They're so different

I believe in second chances, and that's why I believe in you.
