He's fine. The performance is fine. The design is fine. But, like...all right, imagine you walk into the new 'Star Wars' this fall, and, you know, you've got all the returning characters from the original trilogy played by the original actors, except Luke is now played by Shahrukh Khan. No setup, no explanation.
Like, Nick Fury is a character, not a secret identity. If you want Samuel L Jackson to be the head of SHIELD, fine------say Nick Fury retired or died and they appointed a new director in his place (one who happens to look a lot like that bald idiot from the SW prequels). Don't just change an established character on a whim------make a new one. They aren't claiming the current Ms. Marvel is the same character as before.

AI: I think that Venom is cool but Spider-Man is always my favorite. And yeah, I never read much American comics but I followed Spider-Man religiously in cartoons, film, and gaming.[DOUBLEPOST=1422577811,1422577570][/DOUBLEPOST]Oh yeah, maybe I wasn't clear on my position regarding female Ghostbusters. As new characters they're fine, like a sequel. I just don't want the originals essentially replaced.

Did they ever make regular universe Nick Fury into Samuel L. Fury? Because I didn't really give a **** for the alternate design since the Ultimate universe was alternate, but if they ever changed to that design in the regular universe without any explanation that makes no damn sense.

^^I have no idea. Nick Fury is Samuel L. Jackson in Ultimate, he's normal in MAX...I couldn't tell you what's actual canon these days with a gun to my head. Haven't read a regular universe Marvel book in about ten years. Seen a couple of the movies.
Question-------if Marvel decided to put out a new 'Nick Fury and his Agents of SHIELD' comic series tomorrow, what are the odds it would star old Clint Eastwood-ass grizzled WWII-vet-turned-superspy Nick Fury, rather than the much-more-visible Samuel Jackson version from the hugely-popular, hugely-influential movie series? Would Marvel allow canon to trump cultural currency? Would Disney allow them to allow it, for that matter? It's a poser.
Oh, like who even knows what I'm talking about anyway, or would care if they did.

The most unrealistic part of this is that only women cry about such petty things whilst yelling misogyny, rather than the example of ice cream itself.

Question------if they relaunched 'Nick Fury and his Agents of SHIELD' as a regular comic series tomorrow, set in the non-Ultimate universe, what are the odds they'd feature old Clint Eastwood-ass grizzled WWII-vet-turned-superspy white Nick Fury over the current much-more-visible Samuel L Jackson Avengers version from the hugely-popular-and-influential Marvel cinematic deal? Which version has more cultural currency. Would Marvel allow canon to trump cultural currency? Would Disney allow them to allow it, for that matter? It's a poser.

Let's keep arguments about social concepts centered around film and on topic, please. This isn't PPR.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm excited for this. It's refreshing to have a cast with more than one token girl. Here's hoping the movie is good though lmao
It's funny how a lot of people will yell at so called "SJWs" or people who want more diversity in media by saying "oh yeah, then go make your own (movie/game/etc.)."
and then react with horror, outrage, and disdain when people do just that.
You and I both know that's not what's happening here. This isn't making a new series, it's another movie wearing the bloody skin of another like the main villain from Men In Black.
People are (in general) fine with additive stuff. This is an example of conversion of an existing series.
On topic for the movie itself, the best/cruellest comment I saw was on Twitter.
It was something like:
"Ghostbusters cast announced: starring Who, Who, Who and Fat Jokes"
Why is it drug addicts and computer afficionados are both called users?
FTFY. I have to say, there's a huge difference between some crap like Teenage Mutant Ninja Baytles which is messing up a live-and-well franchise with a current fanbase and something like this which is probably going to end up being nothing like that.
That said, I doubt very heartily than anything ever will top Murray in the original so it's kind of an effort in futility to make anything else with Ghostbusters.
They released games in 2011, 2012, and 2013. That's not a dead franchise. Resting at worst.
^ What about comics? Have they still been publishing those, or were those collections I've seen for sale in bookstores reprints? (I actually don't know myself.)
You know, funny thing.
I've never personally experienced any of these people who think an all female ghostbusters cast is "pandering". Like these "Twilight fangirls" and "Apple purists", I've only heard about them from a friend of a friend who has claimed to have had an experience with these people.
Those sections exist but they are really much smaller than you give them credit for. The vocal minority becomes the whole of the community, but the truth is people get into certain products for certain reasons. Not everyone who bought all the books in Twilight were necessarily obsessing over Bella Swan, for instance. Maybe they just wanted something to read and it was popular at the time.
Yeah, like I said, I've never experienced these people personally - which is why I think it's the "Silent Majority" at play again.
Dunno so Googled it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostbuste ... ing_series
Relatively recent activity there, dunno if it's still continuing. Maybe the other versions are. Either way, the series didn't magically end back in the 80's with the movies, not by a long shot. To call it a dead series isn't accurate, unless you specifically mean the films, and even then they've been trying to get a movie out for a while now, so that's not dead IMO either. From what I hear Bill Murray was to blame.
I don't see how anything you said detracts from the point I made. It is literally no different than having a new character take over the role of Captain America or Spider-Man. Different. But the series will go on. Fans will survive with the conversion, as you put it. The original will still exist.
And here's the thing: It's okay to exclaim "wow, I don't think that's a good idea/I won't like that." It is okay to not like the thing or concept or idea, really, it is. It's not okay to be an asshat about it or use the casting as an excuse to justify continued sexism or poor treatment of underrepresented characters in media. You have the right to do that, but it still makes you an asshat.
