No, really.
A film adaptation of Tetris is stacking up at Threshold Entertainment.

The production company, which saw success in video game adaptation with Paul W.S. Anderson'sMortal Kombat film in 1995, is partnering with the Tetris Company to develop a film based on the classic game, in which players line up rows of interconnected blocks.

The film will adapt it into what the producers describe in a statement as an "epic sci-fi adventure."

Larry Kasanoff, Threshold's chairman and CEO, will produce, with Threshold's Jimmy Ienner and the Tetris Company executive producing.

"We look forward to partnering with Threshold Entertainment to reimagine that common experience [of playing Tetris] and bring a spectacular new Tetris universe to the big screen," Tetris Company managing director Henk Rogers said in the statement. "In this new universe, as you'll soon find out, there's much more to Tetris than simply clearing lines."

The Tetris movie is a nostalgic entry in a widening array of upcoming video game releases, including adaptations of Warcraft, with Duncan Jones directing, Splinter Cellfrom Doug Liman, Uncharted from Seth Gordon and Shadow of the Colossus fromAndres Muschiett, all planned for release in the next two years. Meanwhile, the Adam Sandler starrer Pixels, directed by Chris Columbus, will bring classic arcade games to life and is set for a May 15, 2015, release.

I can see Tetris being set in a totalitarian world where students are judged based on their success in the game.

Like Russia or something.

Heh.
