Rubber - 7/11: This was definitely a film.
High School Musical - 7/12: C
I saw Rubber after hearing a bunch of my friends describe it as this incredible bad movie a la Troll 2 or The Room or something of that sort. But it really wasn't that. It's an art film that's disguised as a B-movie (or is it the opposite of that?) so it's not really on the same level as my favorite B-movies because it's intentionally silly while still being very well-made. But just because a B-movie is self-aware or well-shot doesn't mean it's necessarily actually interesting and I think overall it came across to me as "Babby's 1st Art Film" though I don't think I necessarily have enough knowledge about art films to really be an authority on that topic.

^Speaking of plot, I just noticed that Frozen is basically a rip-off of The Lion King.
Don't believe me? In both movies, there's an heir whose parents die horrifically, forcing the heir to run away from home and then sing a song about letting the past go.
Meanwhile, things get really nasty back home, so the heir is eventually driven to return and save the day from an evil prince.
2014 might be the year of the superior sequel. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was better than First Avenger. X-Men: Days of Future Past was better than First Class. How to Train Your Dragon 2 was better than the original. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was better than Rise. Transformers wasn't as bad as the last two. I've also heard that 22 Jump Street was better than 21 Jump Street though I can't confirm that myself. Only sequel I've seen this year that has been inferior to the first was The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

My favorite Godard, and second favorite overall French New Wave film, after Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player. Perhaps the most experimental film of the early part of Godard's career (aka the only part of his career really worth paying attention to if you're not writing your dissertation on him), it's also the most entertaining.
My Young Auntie - (Lau Kar-Leung, 1981) - 3 August 2014 - B+
It dawns on me that before tonight I hadn't watched a martial arts film in over a year, which is surprising as some of you longtime members may remember that at one point martial arts films were pretty much my favorite thing in life. This was a welcome return to the genre, coming from one of the greatest directors of action movies, who sadly passed away last year.
I still have a boatload of martial arts films I have yet to watch that I collected over the past 8 years. Perhaps this calls for a marathon...

Shaolin Prince - (Chia Tang, 1982) - 5 August 2014 - B
The thing with the old Shaw Bros. kung fu movies is that, even when they're bad, they're still good. I had never heard of this movie before until I saw it sitting on the shelf of a local video store, and I'm down for a Shaw flick starring Ti Lung. I can see why it's not one of the more well-known Shaw releases - the script is unbelievably cheesy even by the standards of old kung fu movies - but the fights are entertaining as hell.

Movies 66/30
Italic/bold - First time viewing
Yellow - Watched in theaters (in 2014)
This is the End - 7.5/10
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) - 6/10
Ninja Turtles, about as "eh" as you'd expect. No plot, no character development, just groan-worthy goofy humor and semi-decent action and effects.

I hadn't watched any movie since May. Oops. I liked Stars... but I think the book might have been better. The kids can act and I liked Hazel, Gus and Isaac. Good story. Don't watch it when you're depressed.
