So I don't know how many of you know this but I'm just a little bit of a fan of The Room. Prior to tonight I saw the film 29 times and really wanted the 30th time to be special. So I decided to hit up some of my friends and go to a midnight showing in Detroit. And the best part about this is that TOMMY WISEAU HIMSELF WAS THERE for a meet & greet session beforehand as well as Q&A.
We got there around 11:30 which probably wasn't the best timing for the meet and greet. It was already past midnight when the line got into the theater and just as we were 10 or so people away from getting to meet Tommy they cut us off so they could start the Q&A. I did get to stand up pretty close to Tommy but all I have to prove it is this crappy picture
But when we went into the theater to grab our seats, who was right on the inside of the door but THE LEGEND HIMSELF? I got to tell him I was a big fan and I asked for a picture, but he told me he was done for the time being (understandably so). He told me to come back after the movie but he was gone by the time the showing ended. Fortunately it's there tomorrow night and we're allowed to go to the meet and greet then as well (and we'll get there sooner this time) so I'll still have a chance to get a better picture with my hero, as well as get him to sign my brand new The Room Blu Ray and "YOU ARE TEARING ME APART LISA" shirt. Speaking of which, the merch was surprisingly cheap. The Blu Ray was $12 and shirt was $10 which is fairly reasonable for something like this.
Before the Q&A we got a sneak peek at his new sitcom The Neighbors but the video was barely audible with all the chatter and excitement of everybody there. The Q&A went... interesting. Tommy is by far the most interesting man I've ever come across. He dodged a lot of stupid questions. He started a "USA! USA! USA! USA!" chant which was the most amazing thing ever. Somebody got a little sarcastic with him and he went on a long tangent about mean people (in which he asked the crowd if "I can express myself" to thunderous applause). His favorite sandwich is tuna (though apparently he doesn't eat bread anymore), Claudette does indeed survive her breast cancer, and if anyone other than himself played Johnny in the film, it would have been Brad Pitt or "Mark" Damon. Luckily I was on an aisle seat so when he ran through the crowd giving high fives I got to give him one. I GAVE TOMMY WISEAU A HIGH FIVE, BITCHES
The movie itself might have been the best experience watching The Room I've had yet. It's definitely welcomed on the 30th viewing to have a crowd full of people watching it. Though if you're going to see the film for the first time, see it by yourself or with a smaller group of friends so you can understand what's going on. But the crowd was great. Throwing spoons at the screen, singing along with the sexy slowjams, passing footballs around when Johnny and friends passed the football, and the way the audience that was so loud and excited all of a sudden fell silent for the brilliant flower shop scene was beautiful.
I haven't laughed this much in a long time. Stay tuned tomorrow for hopefully some pictures.
