The Kickstarter just launched today, I believe, and they're already past $250,000 of the desired $1,000,000 so that's really cool.

That's great. I wish I could score about .1% of that much backer money.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

It's at 500K right now. They could reach their goal for the month within the day. I guess that's the power of a good cause combined with massive nostalgia.

Already backed. Just when I thought I would go a week without throwing money at a Kickstarter...

This Kickstarter is 10 hours old. It has almost reached $1mil. Good heavens, people must really want those Geordi LaForge headshots.

^^Well, if you wanna spite them, go back a lower-profile project with a lower funding goal. like mine ;)

^^^^ "For what" is probably a combination of the following things:
1. The project is for expanding a product that helps kids not only learn to read, but to enjoy reading.
2. The project aims not only to expand the app to more media, but also give struggling schools these resources to enjoy for free.
3. People are nostalgic about Reading Rainbow, because the show was on in their childhood and quite possibly helped them enjoy reading growing up.
4. Parents want their kids to enjoy reading as they grow up, and they know from their childhood nostalgia that Reading Rainbow is able to help kids want to read.
5. I mean, you can HAVE DINNER WITH GEORDI LAFORGE HOW COOL IS THAT

I mean if I had a few dollars lying around I'd donate for sure. Though I wouldn't get one of the bigger packages because I don't want to meet LeVar in person. I just want a picture. You can't disappoint a picture.
and that's the waaaaaaaaaay the news goes

I know the economy sucks and our dollar isn't what it used to be, but a million bucks is still a million bucks. Glad it was a success because Kickstarter is great, I'm glad it works, but I don't see how they need that much. Maybe I should actually read the page, huh?

I think the million is mostly needed to cover the expenses of allowing schools free access to the resources.

Well, I am glad. Don't want reading to disappear (I wonder if it's even possible?).

This is so awesome. The internet is such a weird, wonderful place.

I'm just sad that I missed this yesterday. I could have had a chance to wear Geordi's visor...

^ Just because their goal is reached doesn't mean you can't donate still. The visor package is still available. Just pull out that $10,000!

They need that much because they are producing a lot of content, including web content, app design, and physical items for long term sustainability. Plus, they are providing web and app content to disadvantaged schools for free - that costs them, and with the state of schools, that is going to be expensive for them.

And think about the societal returns. We know that a better educated populace also is more healthy economically, so improving education and literacy is not going to only have individual gains in the form of increased social, economic, and cultural capital, but is better for our society on numerous levels.
