9. Dredd - (8/10) Once again, a movie that knows what it wants to be and does it very well. Not only is it a cool depiction of a gritty apocalyptic future full of bloody sci-fi action, but it has really good characters too. You can't help but love Dredd's deadpan demeanor and unbelievably calm-under-pressure attitude. I'd love to see a sequel for this movie, but according to the interwebs it's not likely going to happen. A shame, really, this would've been an awesome start to a series.

10. Upstream Color - (?/10) A, uh, really artsy film that focuses on a couple that were both infected by a parasite that carries memories... or something. I can't even give this one a score, I don't know what I just watched. Usually I can appreciate these kind of slow, thoughtful films (Memento and 2001 are among my favorite movies), but this one was a bit too much for me. By the end I felt like I was watching a surreal montage of flowers and pigs set to ambient music. I was just waiting for it to end so I could look up a synopsis to try to make sense of it. I watched Shane Carruth's first movie "Primer" a while ago, so I suppose I should've expected this one to be just as bizarre and unconventional... but... I don't even know. I can appreciate the film for what it is, I'd be lying if I said it didn't invoke some kind of tranquil emotion with its silent long shots and slow transitions and whatnot. But as far as a narrative or story goes, I didn't get it.

Up to 3/30:

Wordplay (Creadon, 2006), 1-2-14 – 10/10
Annie Hall (Allen, 1977), 1-13-14 – 586/10
Runaway Train (Konchalovsky, 1985), 1-23-14 – 6/10

The last one was based on a script by Akira Kurosawa. Kinda creepy, but it got across whatever existential messages it wanted to get across.

Paul (Mottola, 2011), 1-24-14 – 7/10

My brother asked me to show Paul again, as he remembered none of it. Not Simon Pegg's finest moment on the screen, but it serves its primary purpose well as a sci-fi pastiche, one that Tarantino himself might be proud of.

11. Dallas Buyers Club - (9/10) A great, mature drama, once again focusing on a character that you should hate but can't help but connect with, and really shows just how talented an actor Matthew McConaughey is when given the right role. What really stood out to me though, was Jared Leto. I mostly know him for his music, but he plays this strange, complex character so well that I nearly forgot it was him. I can see both these guys getting Oscars for this movie.

12. Blackfish - (8.5/10) Man, this is the kind of documentary that makes you feel like crap for even existing in the same world as its subject. It almost drove me to tears at a few points. I don't even want to say much about it, just watch it. It's completely changed my perspective on animal captivity.
