Tym headed to the Jousting Grounds.

Several options were available for the aspiring jouster. Among them:

a) New Steed Tourney: a tournament held annually around this time for young men and women who have just gotten their steeds. There are three divisions: Land, Flying, and Magical. Land is for ground steeds, flying is for flying steeds, Magical is for ground or flying steeds that cast spells. You're eligible for Flying and Magical.
b) Practice Match: just practice jousting, you can bet money and you gain a little experience but that's it.
c) Prize Match: for a small price, joust for a larger cash prize or an item. You may place bets.
d) Ranked Fight: for a small price each fight, joust for a rank. After several fights you can move up, and have access to tougher opponents, more tourneys, and better prizes.
e) Stadium Games: practice specialized training games, for a price. Often there will be gaming interludes during or before tourneys; the winner takes home a prize in addition to anything won in the tourney. Also may sometimes improve stats, if a lot of time is spent.
f) Betting Area: Bet on matches. Also available at the Racetrack for races.

Which are you going to do?

Alright. There's sixteen contestants, you're seeded 14th. You can watch the other battles, bet on them, shop for stuff, or just wait for your fight. What do you want to do?

Tym led his phoenix up the stone stairs towards the jousting platform. In flying tourneys, a high brick wall separated the two sides. The steed would leap off the platform and fly straight forward until the lances met over the wall. Ten or twelve feet below was a pit of soft sand, so while the fall was a bit disconcerting, injuries were very uncommon. The lancer reached the top, mounted up, and urged Ged out onto the small ledge from which he would depart.

He squinted across the long space at his opponent, a youthful pegasus riding girl whom he had not met before, although he'd seen her when in other Syv villages. A sparse crowd dotted the stands of the small arena. A lower-ranking tournament official who was conducting the New Steed tourney glanced over some scrolls and projected loudly.

Official: The winner of the last match was... Nithav, on the griffon! Here we have... to your north, Cabra, a pegasus rider! And to your south, Tym, on the majestic phoenix! Riders, ready yourselves! On my count, leave the platform and charge!

Realizing he had little idea how to joust, except from some matches he'd watched when he was younger, he spurred Ged forward a bit.

Official: Lower your lances!

Each obliged.

Official: Hold reins! And... now!

Before Tym could even move his knees, the phoenix soared off of the platform, straight ahead.

4 turns from contact at current speed. Current speed is 20.

Every turn you can change one of three things: speed, lance position, and aerial location. For speed, specify whether you want to speed up, slow down, or stay the same. If you speed up, you've got a better chance of knocking her off, but you also get less turns to adjust. If you slow down, you can adjust to what she does more, but you won't hit as hard. For lance position, there are 9 possible positions. They work like on your number pad: 5 is the center, 8 is up, etc.
7 8 9
4 5 6
1 2 3

The same goes for aerial location, although it's a little different. For lance location you start at 5 and can move one space in any direction including diagonal each turn; however, you can't go to the left of 4, below 2, etc. For aerial location, however, you can continue going in those directions. 4 means you move more outside, 6 means you move closer to the wall, 8 means higher, 2 means lower, or you can do a diagonal. 5 means you stay the same.

After three joustings of any kind, or participation in one tourney, you can get a shield, which you can adjust as well.

Write the form as

Sp/Sl/Ma (for Sp[eed up], Sl[ow down], or Ma[intain current speed]) lance position aerial location. So for example, if you wanted to speed up, go higher, and keep your lance where it is, you'd write

Sp 8 5

That make sense to you? I can explain more if you're confused.

By the way, you'll kind of suck for now, since you've never jousted before, but you'll get better.
