How has there not been a topic on this amazing manga/anime? It's probably one of the best sports manga of all time.
Here's the story: Joe Yabuki is an orphaned young man. While wandering through the slums of Tokyo one night, he meets an alcoholic ex-boxing trainer named Danpei Tenge. Danpei tries to convince Joe to become a boxer, with him as his trainer. Of course, Joe refuses. Later, Joe gets into a fight, and Danpei, seeing Joe's talent for fighting, again tries to convince him to become a boxer, who again, refuses. Joe gets into another fight, and he and Danpei get sent to jail. Joe finally agrees to take to take up boxing. Eventually, Joe gets sent to a juvenile prison, where he meets Rikiishi, a former boxing prodigy, who becomes his rival. After getting out of jail, Joe begins his career as a boxer.
Anyway, the series has a great story, interesting characters, exciting fights, and accurately details the sport of boxing, even showing the consequences of boxing for a career.
Like when Carlos Rivera becomes brain-damaged after his fight with Jose Mendoza
I highly recommend it.
A****a No Joe.

I literally just went through all of the 4-letter vulgar words I could think of to see what would make a Japanese word given those asterisks.
it took a while because i went alphabetically

Anyway regarding the show. I may or may not check it out, but I have to be in a very specific mood to watch rising fighting sport star anime and not get insanely bored.
