Yeah, maybe it was. I'd argue that they were trying to give Rainbow Dash a taste of her own medicine. It might have dulled the potency of the moral learned, but I thought it was funny watching Rainbow's reactions. Especially to Spike's reporting "Rainbow Dash is jealous."

I'm kind of curious what you think about this episode. Do you really think that Rainbow didn't learn anything? Or that the lesson that she was supposed to learn isn't valid?

It took me a while. It's still an amusing journey, though. I think that the series starts hitting its stride in the latter half of the first season; not sure if it's because the actual quality increased or if I just got time to know the characters better and enjoyed their interactions more.

no the writing explicitly made it so they had to tell her the moral so she literally learned nothing. the episode is worthless

Didn't take much time for me to get acclimated to the show---but then, I've always been open to cartoons. Like, I saw there were episodes on the digital cable, so I picked one at random to watch ('Look Before You Sleep'---great episode, still one of my faves), and, you know, that was enough to make me want to see more.

There have been episodes where I think the lesson learned was sort of the exact wrong thing. Like 'Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000'---Applejack's letter comes off really stupid and thoughtless in light of what actually happens in the episode. I don't know.

Dude.

She nearly lost Sweet Apple Acres in a sucker's bet because she let the Flimflams prick her pride. In fact, the only reason she didn't lose the farm is that the Flimflams suddenly turned into total idiots at the very end. That seems like an ideal time for humility and a healthy assessment of one's failings, not 'lol i was right all along'.

The lesson itself is valid, and I think Rainbow Dash learned something. I just thought it's delivery was unjust. It's like if a kid was pushing other kids down and his mom was pushing them down first so he couldn't do it.

I'm not sure what you mean with that analogy. Pushing people over is a bad thing, saving people is a good thing. I don't really see how it is unjust to help people. Is it because they didn't treat Rainbow Dash with respect?

Frankly, I'm still surprised that people don't like this episode. I am but a simple caveman, and my primitive brain can't comprehend. =\

I agree with everything in this post. The part that sort of gets me about this episode is that the bad guys never really get what's coming to them. They roll into town, get free apples, get even more free apples, and uproot apple trees. They then leave so they can fleece over another town.

I don't really want to argue about this. I just don't think it was the most ideal way of teaching humility.

Meanwhile, look at this promo:

Tee hee. It's kind of funny how they're using thirty-year-old graphics for a kids show.

For me it was the two-part premiere of the first season, with Nabooru...or whatever her name is, girl who used to post here, around last April. We saw fan art, and wanted to know what the hype was all about. We both just said, "to hell with things, let's watch ponies!", and did it. And we loved it.

But yeah, for as funny as the end of The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 was, I'm kind of agreeing with everybody else...
Thinking about it more, my second-favorite episode of the season was Read It and Weep. I just thought that one was cute.

Just now watched the S2 finale. (My finger's right on the pulse, as usual.) I thought it was pretty swell, baby.
I know this kind of thing is a little unavoidable, and they handled it about as well as could be expected, but it would really have enhanced the narrative if they'd even hinted at Shining Armour's existence earlier in the series. Like, considering Twilight's relationship with him, not to mention her seeming ignorance of the importance of friendship at the start of the series...this just felt a little retcon-y to me, I guess. I don't know.

Cool fight scene. Standout moments---Fluttershy and RD faking the changelings out by blending in, the return of Pinkie's party cannon

Whoever voiced Cadance did a terrific job. Especially during the song---has to take talent to do a good/evil duet like that with yourself.
Wasn't that Kathleen Barr, or did she just do Queen Chrysalis?
Just had a look over at the greasy MLPFiM wiki---apparently both the nice and nasty versions of Cadance were voiced by one Britt McKillip. Ms. Karr apparently only took over the role when the beast reverted to its true form and got all legion-voiced and all.
[EDIT: ^way hay hay]

I love how John de Lancie's all roped into this. I hope they get someone like Mark Hamill as a voice actor in season three.
