...scattershot, really. I follow certain directors, production companies and genres; I listen to recommendations from a select few critics and (more importantly perhaps) people who know me; and I spend lots of time in stores just pawing through DVD racks like a galoot. I guess it isn't the most well-rounded approach, but it works for me.

The net makes it easy enough to catch new ones by word of mouth, and I am usually willing to watch trailers. There are a very few amount of directors or studios that I trust consistently, and there are quite a few on a sort of blacklist of ****makers that I wouldn't ever watch again (Bay, for example. Transformers 2 was inexcusably unwatchable. Same applies to Star Wars crap, after Episode 2 I'm not wasting another minute of my life on any new films in the series.)
I muttered 'light as a board, stiff as a feather' for 2 days straight and now I've ascended, ;aughing at olympus and zeus is crying

I generally don't watch a whole lot of movies. I usually only see it if it's on TV, and it looks interesting. If I see a trailer for something I want to see, I usually end up waiting for it to come out on DVD so I can rent it.
