John Carter Trailer 2012 -- Official Movie Trailer | HD - YouTube

So yeah, was surprised when I didn't find a topic for this. Saw it last week, and I have to say, it's one of the better scifi and adventure films I've seen in a while. Though at first glance it looks like it'll just be eye candy put out by Disney for a quick buck, I actually found the plot engaging, the characters interesting, and the nice looking cgi was definitely good too. Definitely a DVD purchase for me when available. *thumbs up*

Anyone else seen it? If so, water your thoughts?

It looks like a great film from what I've seen of the trailers, yahoo are already saying that it's a flop, but meh. Thinking about going to see it, but at the moment. Money is not something I can be afford to be spending.

I hated the advertisements. Not only were they everywhere, but the entirety of the ads were "JOHN CARTER. GO SEE IT." I think they expected everyone to know exactly what John Carter was, but I and many others had/have no freaking clue, and it's not interesting enough to even want to know.

that's not impressive though I am a loser :(

Yeah, that marketing was pretty bad.

I think today was my first time hearing of the movie. The title made me think it'd be political or something.

If they had kept the title "John Carter of Mars" it probably would have generated at least $100 million more.

It looks interesting, but it didn't make up for the $200M it spent making the movie itself.

Yeah there were only maybe at most 10 people seeing the movie when I went, and that includes the other two I was with; though ironically that is more than when I went to see Sherlock Holmes 2. >.>

Now let's add in the costs of promotion and distribution, and you've got one hell of a flop on your hands. We might have a new record here.

Also, this man is my new hero:
“The studios are just spending too much money and there’s just not the box office there to support it,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com.

“John Carter’s bloated budget would have required it to generate worldwide tickets sales of more than US$600-million to break even, Dergarabedian said, a height reached by only 63 films in the history of moviemaking.
As a side note, according to boxofficemojo.com, this movie is #1 in Brazil, Hungary, Mexico, New Zealand, and Portugal right now. 69.9% of the money this movie is making is coming from overseas (which is actually typical for a Hollywood blockbuster). Don't be surprised if there's a sequel. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the top grossing film worldwide so far this year.
