Sucker Punch

Anybody else catch this yet? I saw it last week...& I'm still kinda digesting it.
Really well-shot, a creative narrative, an apt title, & awesome music.
On the other hand, hit-&-miss acting, with a particularly weak lead.

Having only seen 3 Zack Snyder films, he is developing a strong stylistic pattern, including [spoiler]a tendency towards tragic triumphs.[/spoiler]

Also, every time I think about the film, "Feel It in My Bones" by Tegan & Sara gets stuck in my head.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

It has the highest priority in the game, but you have to be fairly good at predicting in order to pull it off well.

The trailer makes me wish they would place a limit on how much digital color correction can be used in a film, or perhaps just outright ban it for a few years as a punishment for making modern films homogenized and ugly. It looks ugly as ****.

That being said, the numerous posters of Vanessa Hudgens at my work have made me realize that she's kind of hot, and I tend to like movies about hot girls who kick ass, so maybe someday I'll check it out on DVD or something. Judging by how painful 300 and Watchmen (which I actually did kind of moderately like the first time I saw it but had an extremely negative reaction on my second viewing) were to watch, however...

I had a hard time with 300 too, but I loved Watchmen, especially the director's cut.

I loved the action scenes, but the end left me felt like I was just punched in the gut.

I guess the title was pretty appropriate.

I saw it. I'm conflicted with myself about it, though. It was good AND bad at the same time. It's not AT ALL what you expected from the commercials. It was a let down, I suppose.

Music rocks though.

Might see if I'm really bored when I'm home. If I see any movie right now it's gonna be Source Code though.

I was disappointed. I expected it to be a movie that goes beyond the norm in terms of action and unrealism, but contained a deep hidden message, like Scott Pilgrim.

Some people might say that that's how it was, but I think they failed on both accounts. It would make a nice game, but not a good movie.

The action scenes were missing something.

[spoiler]Maybe it was consequence. They're all in her head. It doesn't matter if she fails or not. It's like thinking a video game is dramatic when you're watching someone else play it. "Oh, he died. What a shame. Back to playing cards or whatever."

Now, think about the message that the narrator says at the end of the film. It had nothing to do with the story! The story was about obtaining weapons, and then fighting - the message was that they already had them.

And the opportunity to use dreams as a metaphor was missed by a long shot, which is a pity.[/spoiler]

The story itself was ridiculous. It was flimsy and full of holes, moreso than silly putty mixed with swiss cheese.

[spoiler]First, Rocket and co. accepted the mission too readily. This wasn't the first plan that had been tried, and the previous ones were probably more complicated. And Rocket and co. didn't even know the explanation behind those four items! If I were in said situation, I would say the plan was bad because Babydoll would be escaping the place where she belongs - a house for the mentally insane.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]But Babydoll doesn't belong there. We explicitly see that her stepfather committed her to keep her quiet about his attacking her & her sister. Either way, she DEFINITELY doesn't need a lobotomy, & the only chance she has to avoid that is escape.

Rocket, I think, has a little bit of a crush on her rescuer Babydoll...and she's a little bit of a thrill junkie. Notice that in the combat scenes, she's always the wildest fighter & gets herself into the most trouble.

Besides that, death in the battle fantasies absolutely DOES have consequence; the only time one of the girls dies in combat is when Rocket blows up with the "Chef's Knife" bomb, at the same time the actual chef stabs her.

The narrator's (you did catch that Sweet Pea was the narrator, right?) final line was a callback to one of the Wise Man's first lines, after he gives Babydoll her sword & gun in the first fantasy and the giants attack.[/spoiler]

Scott Pilgrim was much better, for exactly the reasons you said, but Sucker Punch still covered its bases pretty well.

Why is it called Sucker Punch, anyway?

Judging from the trailers, there's very little punching, and more heavy weapons and explosions.

Red Letter Media said it was really bad. I'm inclined to trust their judgment.
