'Glee' Creator Lashes Out Against Kings of Leon and Slash

Glee creator Ryan Murphy has attacked Kings of Leon for publicly rejecting an offer to have their music in an episode of the hit series. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Murphy said that the band are "self-centered *******s" and that they "missed the big picture."

So what is the big picture? According to Murphy, the band are missing the opportunity to inspire kids to get involved with the arts. "A 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument," Murphy explained. "It’s like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music.”

Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill was contacted for response by the Hollywood Reporter and mostly seemed confused by Murphy's anger. "This whole Glee thing is a shock to us," he told THR. "At the time of the request, we hadn’t even seen the show. It came at the end of that record cycle, and we were over promoting [“Use Somebody”]."

Followill further clarified that his band did not intend to snub the show and its fans, much less disrespect anyone involved in music education.

Murphy also responded to a recent attack on the show by Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, who had also rejected a request to use his old band's music on Glee on the grounds that he — well, totally hates the show. "Usually I find that people who make those comments, their careers are over; they’re uneducated and quite stupid," Murphy said.

What a self-absorbed baby.

I'm 'meh' on the issue. KoL's response was a bit uncalled for, as he made a kind of homophobic tweet that was really inappropriate, but I can't stand Ryan Murphy, and have a love/hate relationship with Glee. Started strong, but has dissolved into a pile of rubbish with nonsensical plots that mainly cater to fans every whims. Also, Ryan Murphy is apparently okay with marginalizing disability, gender, or race, but is okay climbing on a high horse when it comes to gay rights (that in itself isn't bad, it's the appalling treatment of other characters that is).

For a guy who preaches that his show is so 'tolerate' and progressive, it sure is offensive on a bunch of other levels.

I was pretty sure Glee was a good way to get people to hate music. I know I have an instant gag reflex every time I'm exposed to it that can only be solved by leaving the room or changing the channel.

Stuff like Glee rips the soul out of song-writing and turns it into a commercial product. I lolled at the Slash part; the guy is a counter-culture guitar legend, whose antithesis is **** like Glee.

^It started off that way, and it certainly has it's moments still. But Ryan Murphy has no consistent or clear vision, so what you get week to week is vastly different in style and substance, and that really hurts the show. It can't decide if it's satire or an after-school special.

That, and how the writers handle certain social issues are highly problematic.

1. First season of Glee was alright. I don't really care for it anymore at all.
2. I thought it seemed like Nathan Followil (the guy who tweeted in response to Murphy) was comparing him to a little girl than being homophobic, but it could definitely be interpreted either way.
3. Ryan Murphy is a douchebag.
4. Do we really want 7 year old kids being turned onto a band whose second biggest hit is called "Sex on Fire"? Just saying...
5. Slash definitely still has a career. Last decade he played with one of the bigger mainstream rock acts and released a successful solo album last year.

Well, given that Ryan Murphy *is* gay, telling him to go off and get a manicure and "get a new bra" is kind of especially inappropriate. Heck, now I think on it more, it's offensive to both gay individuals and women.

Either way, both parties are not cool.

I've seen a handful of episodes. A few were pretty good (though one of those was guest-directed by Whedon, who brought in a ringer guest-actor, NPH), & a few were terrible. I just can't get over the fact that the only characters who actually aren't evil, conniving douches are portrayed as stupid (Finn) or repressed (Emma). Heck, even one of the stupid characters still manages to be a manipulative bleep (Brittany)!

No matter my opinion about the show, though, Murphy must be out of his mind to think that everyone he asks for music is gonna enthusiastically say yes.

Finn and Rachel won't be singing "Everlong" any time soon.

Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl doesn't believe bands should feel pressured to allow their music to be performed on Glee.

"It's every band's right, you shouldn't have to do ****ing Glee," Grohl, 42, told The Hollywood Reporter. "Dude, maybe not everyone loves Glee. Me included. I watched 10 minutes and it wasn't my thing."

But the former Nirvana drummer directed most of his ire at Ryan Murphy, the creator of the Fox hit, who earlier this year made disparaging remarks about the Kings of Leon and Guns N' Roses legend Slash after they refused to lend their music to the program.

"The guy who created Glee is so offended that we're not, like, begging to be on his ****ing show," said Grohl. "**** that guy for thinking anybody and everybody should want to do Glee."

So yeah.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Grohl amuses me, as a person. He's generally got his head in the right place. If only he could write music I liked anymore.
