Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Anyone watching this series?
It's an original series by Studio Shaft (Bakemonogatari, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, et al.), and art's by that same guy who did Hidamari Sketch.
It looks awesome so far. It's a magical girl series, but it appears more mature and thoughtful than I expected. It also has great backgrounds, including the most awesome bathroom I've ever seen.

Yeah, I naively expected a happy story when I first heard, 'magical girl show'. That illusion was broken after episode 1.
Yeah, Mami is probably innocent. It seems all she wanted were friends she could show off to or talk to.
I don't think there's anybody that trust Kyubey, though. Especially after a bit of Faust appeared on some walls in Episode 2. I have to wonder, however, if that was just a red herring or something. It's seems like a bit too huge of a hint, really.
EP4 was good. Nothing quite as 'shocking' as what happened in EP3, but that's alright. You don't need every episode to deliver a punch to the gut.
Madoka's dad almost ruined the episode for me though.
*Madoka eats an egg, starts crying*
Dad: You don't like it?
Me: PFFFFFFFFFFT
Lot of 'bad end' flags were being raised for Sayaka, though. Declaring yourself as an 'ally of justice' or whatever never ends well. Also there's a fact that Kyouko plans on knocking her off. That doesn't sound good.
The theory that Sayaka is the witch Homura was fighting in that dream sequence only makes this worse
so
Madoka: Ranged (Arrows)
Mami: Ranged (Guns)
Sayaka: Melee (Sword)
Kyouko: Dunno, probably Melee (???)
Homura: BOMBS
Fun!

Where do you see Madoka with arrows? Is it on the opening title somewhere? Like, we all know she's gonna make the contract sooner or later; her name's in the title, so it should be happening any time now =/
So anyways, looks like the Magical Girl life is a lot more cutthroat than you'd think. There's no magical twentysomethings, so I their lifespan must be pretty short.

Lately, I have really gotten to like Studio Shaft, and the combination of talent that went into this led me to check it out. I got a lot more than I expected, and I love how surreal it is. Then episode 3 came....
I think Kyuubei is not to be trusted. It seems he was trying to get recruits (specifically the title character) from the start, and there was a reason Homura was trying to kill him. The whole contract thing has a deal with the devil feel to it. Plus, after Sayaka took his deal, he knew another girl was coming in to attack her over territory, and said nothing about it to Sayaka. Later, when Sayaka suggested that Madoka go with her on her hunt, he subtly encouraged it. Then, after that familiar is killed, and the other girl attacks, he sits back and does nothing. I am guessing he did all that deliberately, knowing Sayaka would be outmatched, and getting Madoka to be present, so he could pressure her into the deal in order to save her friend. If it's going to take apart the magical girl theme, it may as well have the obligatory cute little animal be a manipulative prick.
1. Get grief seeds -- 2. ??? -- 3. Profit!
^^ Mami showed in one of the early episodes that the grief seeds recharge your soul gem, which is a source of the magical power. I don't really get why magical girls are compelled to fight witches, though. Do they die if their soul gem goes completely black? Mystery desu.
