No mainstream, as usual. Preferably something more upbeat, I'm getting my share of Crapsack World from Fist of the North Star.

If you want something coherent, try Lupin III. If not, try Bobobo Bo Bo Bobo.

Hmm, I haven't really watched that many series.

Have you seen Azumanga Daioh?

If you have, I believe Clamp School Detectives is an interesting anime if you choose to watch it.

Trigun. Not incredibly mainstream, but a little.

Also, if you check it out, you should watch it past halfway, as most people give on it right at the half way point and that is when the show starts to get really good.

Also, if you haven't seen Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo, do.

I'll try and think of some lesser known animes.

What kinds of genres are you looking for?

EDIT: Though I never got to finish it, I remember Chäos;HEAd was an interesting anime. You could check it out and see if you like it.

I only saw the first few episodes of the Devil May Cry anime, but I liked what I saw.

The show Hellsing Ultimate OVA (not to be confused with Hellsing, they're both based on the same material, but Ultimate is an entirely different show) about vampires, nazis, zombies, mercenaries, and so forth. I only missed the final episode.

It's pretty enjoyable.

The show Hellsing is okay, but not nearly as good IMO. (Not mentioning ultimate is a helava lot closer to the source material)

Death Note is very mainstream, but very suggestable nonetheless.

I'll probably think of more.

EDIT2:

Oh, something upbeat... Well, Trigun still fits that well enough.

I only saw one or two episodes of Azumanga Daioh (?) but it was pretty upbeat and funy. Bobobo as well. I didn't like it when I was younger, but personally I think I'd enjoy it myself now.

Watch Azumanga Daioh.

If you want to pull yourself into high-school-girl anime, K-ON!

If you want to go more shonen, Samurai Champloo.

If you want to be all, like, what, try Bakemonogatari.

If you want to laugh and cry, try Clannad.

It'd like to suggest Desert Punk, if you do not mind wackiness.

Ugh, whatever you do don't watch the dubbed version of Desert Punk. The subs are okay, though. The show itself is like a giant ball of cliches.

The first dubbed episode of Desert Punk was great!
(That's the only Desert Punk episode I've watched though)

And do not watch the episodes out of order like I did. It becomes rather confusing, more than doing that would
usually result in.

Err, the dialogue was decent but the voice actors were ****e. I could see why you liked it, but man there's only so much "har har these characters are soooo zany" that I can take. The japanese voices are certainly funnier to me because they just seem funnier by taking themselves more seriously despite having some retarded lines.

EDIT: Have you seen Baccano yet? For chrissake, watch it if you haven't.

BACCANO! is so worth watching. Super awesome.

Upbeat? I dunno, one of my favourite "out of the mainstream" anime is Requiem from the Darkness, but it's all ultra downer, like every episode is made of terrible things happening to people, so I probably shouldn't have brought it up at all.

Panda! Go, Panda! is weird, but it's soooo amusing, I would definitely recommend it, as long as you're cool with things being strange and cute while maintaining hilarious lines throughout. :3

Does FLCL count?

Also, My Neighbor Totoro ALWAYS makes me happy. :D
Nonsense, I have not yet begun to defile myself.

"King of Bandit: Jing." First episode is a little cheesy at the end, but rest can't complain. Basically youngish boy (probably mid teens) stealing a load of stuff, with his witty, wise, women obsessed Albatross, Kir. Also fund to see how many references to alcohol there is too.

Trigun. Already said in this thread. I liked it from the first episode.

and

Final Fantasy Unlimited. Um....yeah. I liked it, I know don't alot of people rate it high. Two kids (Boy and a girl.) go looking for their parents, by getting on a train which takes them to a place called Wonderland. They meet a women how can use natural chi to cause damage, a man who has lost his memory and can summon aoens with a dirtgun, a purse that creates any item you want...and don't want, a chocobo that falls in love with the girl kid, Cid, and a submarine full of ninja like people.

I don't have anything against mecha themes, but shows in that genre do have a habit of being absolutely horrible. What's good about it?

I've heard it's rather good.
Hell, you can simply watch the intro episodes on Madman's site:
