Coincidentally, the last film I watched was The River, but it was the one with Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek.Bomby wrote:Also, the last film I watched was The River. The Tsai Ming-Liang one.

Just watched Mongol. Pretty sweet. Zatoichi was enough to interest me in Tadanobu Asano (as well as Bomby's epic VGF: Asano edition), and it really payed off here; I believed him as Genghis Khan and though the movie was long and a bit tiring, it was well worth it. Sun Honglei was also really fun to watch as Jamukha. Quite a beautiful picture. 9/10

Glad to see that my VGF: Tadanobu Asano Edition has brought good movies to good people. Speaking of Japanese stuff...
Giants & Toys: I'd never heard of this film before tonight (other than the fact that it was on my syllabus), but what a helluva film it is! I try not to use this word as a gut reaction to a film I just saw, but this is a masterpiece.

Millenium Actress. Holy **** what a movie. I still prefer Tokyo Godfathers for being a little more dramatically diverse, but this movie just grabs ahold of your heartstrings and doesn't let go. It's uplifting, yet incredibly sad. Beyond that, the narrative style was pretty bitchin' (the jumpcuts were at first jarring, but it never becomes too confusing and they do a fine job blurring the lines between reality and fiction), and they even threw in some well-done action scenes around the middle to mix it up a bit (all without interfering with the central story, and instead adding to a lighthearted sense of humor that I think very well sums up the actress herself's youthfulness). I now want to see the rest of Satoshi Kon's feature films, as both of the ones I've seen have been a-****ing-mazing.
10/10, fer sure.

^ Millennium Actress is one of my top 5 all time favorite animated films.
Well, it's the Wisconsin Film Festival this weekend. I get to watch lots of American indie films, 35mm prints of slightly older mainstream films, and 35mm prints of foreign films. This year, there's a series celebrating Bong Joon-Ho, who is perhaps my favorite director at the moment. So far I've watched:
Daddy Longlegs (Josh & Ben Sadfie)
The Host (Bong Joon-Ho)
Collateral (Michael Mann)
Short films:
-Hawker (Dustin Feneley)
-Thru (Christopher J. Ewing)
-Alberta, Detroit (John Wilderburg)
-This is the Place (Jacob Strunk)
-Prayers for Peace (Dustin Grella)
Memories of Murder (Bong Joon-Ho)
Tonight I have a film called Milk Punch directed by my own professor, Erik Gunneson, and Bong Joon-Ho's first film Barking Dogs Never Bite. Tomorrow I close the festival with a Chinese film called Oxhide II and Bong's latest (and almost greatest) Mother.

Kick-Ass. An ultra-violent, yet fun film.

I just saw The Wrestler. Sooooo ****ing good. Between Mickey Rourke's ****ing untouchable performance and the brutal honesty in which it portrays backstage life and post-retirement slump in the professional wrestling biz, it's just perfect. I had to choke back tears at the end, and I haven't cried during a film since Ikiru (though I came close while watching Millennium Actress). Now I'm pumped to see Mickey in Iron Man 2 whenever I see it.
Also, watched Rocky again. Still as entertaining as ever.

Eh. Hobbit Gollum missed the mark for me, though it may be that I'm a huge fan of Andy Serkis and the Jackson films in general (I watch the extended ultramegasuper editions twice a year).
I most recently watched Darkman. It was decent, though I was a little bummed that Liam Neeson wasn't on top of his game in this film. Maybe it was the prosthetic false teeth, but he had trouble really pulling anything sympathetic out of the character, for me. Sad, because Neeson's usually a bitchin' actor.
