Well, let me make this official:

I have written up a new Armageddon topic, and it will be up some time soon. I plan on skipping 'sign-ups' this time and leaving it open for any interested party to join. I've also refined the rules and the 'judge' role, which I will be filling and not lazily procrastinating. So, if anybody is reading this, be ready, pumped, and primed for this, because participation is the key.

Note that it is simplified, as in no defined teams and ****, but it's still a team free for all and there's still going to be a few necessary rules. Don't let them scare you. The object here is to get in the fray and fight without worrying about pretense, so in the end it truly is a sort of giant free-for-all. A story is encouraged to develop throughout it as players develop alliances, so that should be really awesome if it's done right.

god i hope it is done right

Would you be so kind....

... as to direct me to the original 'Armageddon' topic so that I may see what it originally entailed?

Also, I will soon be posting a scenario for everyone to play that will be incredibly open-ended and enable any user to participate on either side of two warring factions (or perhaps inject their own faction), but it will require some initiative on the user's part to come up with his own background story and reasons for fighting. Although... I suppose any user who is so inclined may simply jump in and start killing, though that would prevent any kind of grand RP from developing.

I may wait a little while before I start it, because I would be the dungeon master and thus have to devote more time to it than to the usual RP, and I want to complete (or at least make progress) in Oceansford and at least one 1-on-1 duel to get the hang of it first.

Hrm... It was sumerish 2 years ago... so... should be around page 10 or 11.

Yeah, about that. The new one is significantly different, and I'm frankly embarrassed by the old one. I'd actually much rather you wait until the new one (which won't be up until after or at least near the end of Oceansford, because I don't want to swamp myself).

As for what it entails, it's essentially a large team battle. This time around, I'm not going to define the teams, so any number of alliances can be made and ****. It's just as experimental this time around as it was last time, but I feel killing the sign-ups and removing a lot of the pretense should help.

However, if you do really want to see it, Repster's estimation sounds about right.

I see...

It appears to me that the major flaw of the previous war topic (actually... the the major flaw of 90% of the topics I just browsed through, really) is the dependence of each player on the other players to post. Hence, when one member loses interest (read: wusses out) or for some other reason cannot continue, the entire topic comes to a screeching halt.

I did not look very hard, but stumbled across topics like Dangerous Dungeons; Ten Towers; The Twilight Curse; Twilight Harvest; and a number of other unfinished topics that looks like they would have been very entertaining had the players only taken the time to *finish* them.

It is, however, that *finish* part that seems to be the real problem, because the rules here state that you must admit your own defeat, and no one wants to do that.

Ahem... *cough* *cough*

[n00b rant]I realize that I am very new here. I have not yet reached ten posts, and my n00b status will likely not be revoked for months. So, I would not be surprised if my inane suggestions are ignored by the longtime players who have been here forever and have been doing things their way for years. So please... feel free to ignore me.

However...

I am by no means new to roleplaying. I have done this type of text-RPG/battles for over seven years. I would urge you to consider the following rule revisions very carefully and thoughtfully - I am suggesting them because they work.

1. Limits on battle duration - either by a post count or a time limit.

2. Limits on response time - no more waiting 3 months between posts. If you fail to respond in time.... FATALITY!!!

3. Winners determined by judgment, either by a judgment panel, a single judge, or maybe even the mods. No more waiting for someone to decide that they have lost, because from what I have seen, no one ever does!

(Note: I just read through a *LOT* of topics, and only found 3 that ever finished outside of tournaments. There may be more, but I am not willing to dig through an archive that large.)

Those are just a few rules that come to mind, though there would be other good ones.

I am not saying that all these rules need to be strictly enforced on those who do not like them - but I do believe they should be more or less the standard, while other agreements must be made privately.

Again, please note that these are my suggestions, and seeing as how this topic is called "Announcements and Suggestions," I do hope the moderators will at least consider giving them a try.[/n00b rant]

I think this player does a better job of summing up what I meant, albeit more longwinded and harsh.

Whether or not a battle ever actually finishes is up to the individual participants; if they want a time limit or a limit on how long it takes to post, they can do so as they see fit, as has been done in many topics in the past. To make all battles fall into the time limit rule is a bit restrictive, as there are times when life comes between a person and their willingness to indulge their hobby.

As to judgment, that's already an open option. Anybody can call in a judge, and I encourage it myself as it was through judgment of an old battle of mine that I personally improved my creative writing. It's sort of an unwritten encouragement around here to find an able judge, and we do encourage all battles to be finished. But as I said, in the end, limiting a casual battle's freedom is not productive, and all topics here are encouraged to create individual rules and such.

But yeah, I do appreciate the suggestions, man. People tend to ignore that part of the topic, and it's nice to see somebody at least trying to throw out some ideas.

Yes, Traveller, I also agree with that sort of idea. Unfortunately, the issue is step 2 involves actually doing one in that style... something which the people who like to wait 3 months on posts will not change, because they like things the way they are.

You'll just have to make that the rule in the topics you're in and, I guess, continue as you are, suggesting those who make big multi-person topics use it, but otherwise, the status quo is very much in favor of waiting forever.

No. That's not the case. Individual topics are clear to make their own rules, but in large topics, we always enforce a time limit where it's necessary. People who don't do time limits and who do choose to wait as long as they please are inclined to do so. It's not in my nature to barge into someone's private battle, shout "2 LAWNG" and end it before they're good and damn ready. If the battle never has a conclusion, oh well. It's their fault, and it shouldn't bother outside parties.

Two questions and a bonus suggestion

#1 - As I peruse the archives, I notice that there were several members here who were revered as the best of the best. The names I gathered up were mostly from polls, story topics, and good duels, most of which went sadly unfinished. So my question is, does anyone know how to get ahold of any of the following people for a possible 'out-of-retirement' match?

- Wyborn, Joker, Scripture, Erdawn Ildeus, Wilful Wanderer, Phenom Vendetta, Nintendogod, Jedi Knight, Swordmaster Link, the Missing Link, Ryu the Ironwarrior, Link the Survivor, Selphie Meekstone, Rydia Dragmire, Zora, Selene Starblade, Ionic Fox.

Any way to contact any of them? I'd like an old-school rumble, against any of them or anyone else that you might suggest.

If no one knows how, I think I will try again to convince Firestorm to make a comeback. He's fun to kill. :p

#2 - As I typed the first question, I forgot the second one.

Bonus - An inventory system of some sort, allowing us to carry, trade, or fight for control of powerful items? I'm sorta already doing that, seeing as how at least four of my characters in the Oceansord topic are carrying them, but it would be cool if it caught on.

The basic idea is that every member gets one powerful artifact, which can be traded away or wagered on the outcome of a fight. These artifacts may be used in battle, cannot be destroyed, and may be used once per battle to blow up the enemy's mother (or other unpleasant effects).

If an artifact is won, that member may now carry two artifacts, and so on and so forth. If the idea caught on, I'm sure you would see fights for control of the artifacts breaking loose all ove the place.

This would probably require more work on the mods' part, simply maintaining a topic that is used simply to keep track of who is carrying what, but it should not be that much a a hassle (or, in fact, I could do so if that task were delegated to me).

So there's another idea to think over. Other ideas would be nice to hear as well, and it would be EVEN MORE nice if we actually GAVE SOME SUGGESTIONS A TRY.

Ah yes, I just remembered question #2

#2 - Can anyone suggest other good RP sites to browse while I'm waiting? I had fun at KAF (Gasp! Don't hang me!), but I want to broaden my horizons. There seems to be a lull in activity here sometimes, and I'd like a diversion to keep my sword sharp.

^1: Joker and Wybie are still around to certain degrees. Joker posts around the boards and Wyborn is often on AIM. NintendoGod is also on AIM and he's been pulled into judging the NLBFT and Tournament of Red Lions (I think) several times. Swordmaster Link pretty much quit battling years ago (trust me, I tried to get him to come back), but he's still quite active on the boards. As to the rest, they've sort of vanished at this point. Selene was here a few months ago (as was Scrip and even Erdawn) but they're now MIA. The other ones you mentioned literally 'left forever' or something to that extent. The only 'veterans' still around are probably Rep, MM, Acradius, and if you would personally consider me one I guess myself. Dahkness is pretty much veteran status as well, and Vapor's pretty damn close (I'd wager that he's been around about as long as I have and has participated in just as much stuff).

2: If you really want to do the whole artifact/spoils/inventory system in your battles/RPs/what-have-you, go ahead and try it out. It sounds fun and it could be a nice setup to the battles and whatnot.

As to other boards, I haven't actively seeked out a new board in ages. The last one I found was KAF, and with my stupidity (2007 was not a good year) I pretty much ****ed up my chances of enjoying that place. I dunno if anyone else knows of a good one.

Sooooo I don't visit here very often, but I am occasionally interested in these fantasy battles. I want to read some of the good battles that have happened around here in the past and rather than go trawling through the archives like A traveller, I want someone to bring them to me!

What I want to suggest is a sticky that has links to what the mods and regulars here think are the best battles, both current and archived.

Not only will this help lazy buggers like me, it will give other members who accidentally stumble in here something to focus on and some exciting reading material fairly quickly. I don't know about anyone else but when the NLBFT isn't on I get lost in here. Most topic titles are along the lines of 'Challenge Me!' making it difficult to distinguish them and making me do a lot of legwork to find a decent exchange.

So, with a sticky topic that is updated with all the best battles past and present I'll always have somewhere to go first when I get here, and I'm sure I'll come back more often.

Now that's a project I can sink my teeth into.

I think I'll compile a list that I generally think are the best battles and then sort of go through and pick the ones that shaped the history of the place within the last few years. Then, after compiling my personal favorites (and all of the ones I know of that are just plain great by general consensus), I will allow other members to compile their favorite battles as well, be it battles they were personally a part of or just battles they read and enjoyed.

Very good idea.

Imagine that

I had actually already started doing this for my own amusement; I can provide you a fairly good list of impressive/important topics if you wish.

I would definitely suggest your battle against Repster, found currently on page six. Not only is it one of the very few fights that was finished outside of a tournament, but it also contains a detailed judging at the end. The judging alone would be very beneficial, even if the fight was written years ago and does not measure up to your current writing standards.

Sounds good Gale, but you don't need to hold out on creating the topic if you're going for a comprehensive list. You can make it, let people start adding their picks and just edit your first post when you find the ones you like.

In the mean time I'll take a look at the aforementioned battle on page six..

^Oceansford is going really well, and I'm excited about it. So I'm going to at least get near the finish of that (which I'm hoping won't be too soon (we need more stories to develop, and a clear "leader" to eventually emerge to face Stone), but it does need to end and that means Stone will have to have a final battle with somebody within a few more pages) before I start a tourney or a big planned event. I want to ride that momentum and either do a Red Lions tournament (which is probably the best idea) or the planned reboot of Armageddon that I've been sitting on for two months. Either way, expect the big events to keep coming.

On a side note, I am very very pleased with the Gunjin's spark in activity. It's not much, but we do have a small group of dedicated players doing topics (including myself, for the first time in a year). It's really cool to log in and instead of seeing nothing happening, I see 6 or 7 bolded topics. Keep up the good work, invite some friends, spread the word; what we gots heyah is a revival.

By the By, for those who don't know "Willful Wanderer" is "Sarai and Samiel", or "Selene Starblade"

Also, I'm starting the Hotel tomorrow, barring any problems I may have.

A listing with links to the NLBFTs and all their satellite topics would be appreciated. :)
