^ I refuse to call the film a reboot. It's a prequel clear and simple.
Heck, Leonard Nimoy is appearing in the film!

OK, I saw the film and I reverse this above quote.Sean P Kelly wrote:^ I refuse to call the film a reboot. It's a prequel clear and simple.

I thought the film was actually quite clever in rebooting the film, while still acknowledging what has come before (mostly thanks to Nimoy's appearance).
That comment reminded me of the last episode of Fringe (a J.J. Abrams show), where Walter Bishop was explaining alternate timelines on his blackboard.
And the next episode just happens to guest star Leonard Nimoy.

I liked it. 4/4, I'd probably pay non-matinee prices to see it.
The creation of an alternate timeline is really the way to go if you're going to reboot Star Trek. It gets you out of 40+ years of expectations and several generations of the show, not to mention it gives you tons of liberty for future sequels since the timeline is inherently altered. It's pretty damn clear if you're a fan that this is an alternate timeline, but I'm not too sure that point will get across to people that aren't hardcore trek nerds or weren't listening at any given point.
Kind of curious how they're going to take the sequel ride.
I loved it. My wife hated it, though, but I don't think most of her complaints are justified. She didn't like that the ship looked more advanced than in the old show. We actually got into a heated argument because we couldn't agree on whether
altering the time-line
made sense (it totally does). I can sorta understand why she didn't like
Spock and Uhura
though.
The alternate reality thing was apparent to me with the death of the Vulcan race, considering they often appeared in the original series. I do like how it served as both a prequel and a reboot, because that allows some potential for a new timeline of events to transpire.Lurch1982 wrote:
The creation of an alternate timeline is really the way to go if you're going to reboot Star Trek. They should do something like this for Picard. That would be cool.
Also, I noticed that a lot of cable channels are running TOS now. :)
