Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door still has a couple of days to go until its Switch launch, but reviews are now starting to come in. Nintendo lifted the embargo a few minutes ago.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door brings back the classic GameCube RPG. Aside from fresh visuals, the title features an updated soundtrack plus gameplay additions like updated quick-travel pipes and a Partner Ring to quickly swap characters.
Here’s the roundup of reviews for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door:
IGN – 9 / 10
GameSpot – 9 / 10
Gamereactor – 9 / 10
Game Informer – 8.25 / 10
Shacknews – 9 / 10
Metro – 9 / 10
Polygon – N/A
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will be available for Switch on May 23, 2024.
I'm not surprised such a
bad good remaster is getting such good scores. I had high hopes initially,
but and based on what I read from reviews it adds
very little a lot, fixed
very few a lot of issues, and actually introduces new
cuts improvements to quality (apparently it had its framerate cut in half, which is
bizarre good). Also, most reviews either didn't touch on or praised the
censorship stunning & brave changes and DEI meddling improvement of the script, and that's a good thing. It's
a shame glorious to see Nintendo of America do such a
disservice to one of their best games in so many ways.
It's too bad, because Super Mario RPG had a very faithful remake which turned out
better almost as good
(not perfect, but still good). I was hoping that was a good sign for the rest of the Mario RPGs and was looking forward to a possible Mario & Luigi revival,
but and now I'd prefer if they did
n't touch these classics
ever again. They've been pretty hit or miss with them, also similarly
besmirching improving the recent Another Code remakes.
The
only other good thing about this game probably performing well will be, hopefully, Paper Mario returning to its roots gameplay & story-wise
, but if we keep getting such bad localizations and development issues then it may not be very good anyway, which is unfortunate considering how long we've been asking for a return to form.

Can you be more specific...?

Vivian was actually uncensored this time around.

That's not true, Vivian was essentially the Japanese equivalent of a femboy in the original. Plus there's more issues such as a scene with Goombella being censored and an insult Bowser uses being changed.
And besides, there's also the other issues such as the baffling framerate reduction and the visual enhancements seem minimal. It's in no way a strong effort on Nintendo's part.

I wasn't aware you knew Japanese and actually played the Japanese version - someone should probably go correct the people on the wiki who must have read it as trans then - especially since the wiki states that the the original spanish version referenced Vivian as transgender.

You don't seem interested in
discussing the remake as a whole as a gamer, you're exclusively honing in on Vivian to
argue as a transgender rights activist instead. The last I'll say on the subject of Vivian to you is that not only does your own source support what I said, but you're also making an appeal to authority fallacy along with being needlessly aggressive.
Regardless, again, there's a lot more than just Vivian to discuss.
This Goombella scene I mentioned is a pretty bad case of censorship, worse than the Bowser insult from "airhead" to "lunkhead".
The only change I can
sort of understand is Mario's salute, I think it's excessive but at least it has some merit. The erasure of the letter "N" in some graffiti is stupid though. There's probably other things I'm forgetting or that haven't been reported just yet.

Maybe I can argue with you instead?
Super Mario Wiki wrote:The Italian version more explicitly identifies Vivian as a trans woman; her description as a party member states that "she used to be a man, but now she's a woman and proud of it," a sentiment that she reiterates during her initial appearance.
For whatever it's worth, the original Italian version identifies Vivian more explicitly as trans, meaning there is at least one version of the game from 2004 that uses this interpretation.
But, hey, who says Italy gets to have an opinion? This game was made in Japan and we're an English-speaking audience. Sure, the distinction between a femboy and a transgender woman maybe wasn't as widely-understood in 2004, and a Japanese developer could have only used the language they were familiar with. And sure, maybe North America would have been afraid to even broach the subject outside of an R-rated movie, so they'd rather go "NOPE THIS CHARACTER IS JUST A REGULAR CISGENDER GIRL WITH NOTHING REMARKABLE GOING ON PLEASE DON'T SEND US ANGRY LETTERS".
But to make this character
TRANSGENDER?!?!?! I mean, the nerve of the corporate entity known as Nintendo. Don't they know some parents might object to that sort of thing? If my child sees a trans character in a video game, then what? Are they gonna become trans? How am I supposed to live my life knowing Nintendo turned my child into one of those FILTHY TRANNIES.
But the absolute worst part? The most egregious thing about all of this?
VIRTUALLY.
IDENTICAL.

I didn't think it would be Paper Mario that got the gang back together again, but a win's a win in my book, at least something good came from the remaster lol.

I thought bringing up political issues was no longer allowed here?
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Correct. This isn't politics, though you may want to tell others that. I'm just talking about the differences in a Mario game. If we can't do that we don't have a forum anymore.

Complaints about DEI are inherently political; you brought it up.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

If saying "hey look at this
Mario game, here's
what was changed and
why, I'm not a fan" is considered the same as creating a thread to debate, like, illegal immigration or whatever then Nintendo's political to you. If I was celebrating this remaster's changes this suddenly wouldn't be an issue.

It's just that recurring thing of you bringing up a political topic & then not liking when you face dissent.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

We all do fine avoiding politics since its ban. As for disliking dissent, that's backwards; VGF wasn't very political til mid 2010, then you didn't like the few conservative users disrupting the echo chamber.
Anyway, if I wanted to debate politics I'd've harped on Vivian like others here (and the entire Internet, Vivian discourse has obnoxiously eclipsed everything else). Worse changes are smaller tweaks, like Peach no longer saying "maybe I should act more like a princess".

I guess I wasn't clear, because you're still doing it: Stop.
You *did* harp on Vivian.
You *did* bring it up in the first place.
And, look over this thread again, I have not said one word on the matter other than discussing site policy.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

No, in fact I clearly tried to pivot from it after it became clear Vivian was going to dominate discourse, or did you not see my reply to DZ completely trying to deescalate?
You *did* bring it up in the first place.
My first post didn't even mention her once.

I did. What I see is you accusing me of bringing up politics as a common occurence and of disliking dissent. I
also see you having no problem with the use of a term you'd normally consider a slur, "trannies", but that's fine if it's in service of browbeating the bigot who dares to prefer accurate translations, I guess...?
If you think that somehow breaks the rules then just close it, otherwise feel free to actually comment on TTYD's changes.

I've never understood why people object to bad guys saying, thinking and doing bad things. Was anyone really expecting courtly behaviour and gentility out of Bowser? You know, the guy who clearly thinks of regal titles like "Your Scumminess" and "Your Rottenness" as a sign of due deference?
Like, don't get me wrong, I love Bowser. I love him same as I love Bluto from the Popeye cartoons. I think everybody loves him, I don't think anybody'd change him. So why change his dialogue? He's a dummy and a bully----------he's gonna say dumb, nasty things, because it's in his character to do that. Gods below, please don't Lucas 'Thousand-Year Door', Ninty.
Did they change any of the parts where Bowser refers to Kammy the Magikoopa as a "crusty smelly old hag"? Is that still acceptible, where saying he wishes Peach would shut up is not? That's pretty weird!
