I've never played FF, but you summed it there. In fact, I haven't played many Square or Enix games. The hell am I doing here?

^^ You left out Tactics for the GBA, FF2j, FF3j, FF5j, and FFXI (It's out, isn't it?). FF Legends isn't really FF, but it is quite good.
Personally, I would say FF6 is not only the best 2D FF, but the best FF period.
It is notable that many of the RPG stereotypes that exist today exist because of FF.
For the best explanation of FF, I'd say play the games for yourself.
EDIT: Final Fantasy is an RPG. The only one that I need, it's the RPG for me. Final Fantasy is all that I play. All other games are lame, it puts them all to shame.

FF Legend II is the only game of the trilogy I have played. But I liked it a lot. I found the game to be addicting; I've played through it more times than I can count. (Not because it's uncountable but because I don't remember.)

Leaving out the Japan exclusives makes sense. They were the games that tried to do something differrent. I prefer the tried and true method of FF4 and FF6 myself. FF5 was quite good, though.
What about FFXI? Is it out yet? (I haven't been following very closely.)
