Shells For Windows(?)

#1

Post by Deepfake » Fri Aug 27, 2004 2:30 pm

Anyone else here use an alternate shell over Windows? I myself recently aquired a copy of Aston. It's sort of like skinning windows, only more provocative. I've been able to find many well-coordinated themes.

Here's a shot of what mine looks like at the moment:

Run a search for the program 'Aston' on the site www.Download.com

I downloaded Aston, and while it's nice, I prefer the normal windows... I use my desktop religiously.
Video Gamerz Network boards will be back up shortly after a change of hosting. Thanks for not caring.

Currently I'm just using the normal shell, but I've used the trial version of Aston, and it was pretty cool.

Haha! Sorry I didn't realize I was logged into this. This is mango. XD

Read what I said above. After you've got Aston up and running, use the Theme Wizard on the start bar. The bottom left button in the window that appears will link you to an archive site.

So you're fore-warned, Aston is not as 'user-friendly' as the original Windows shell.. I thank god every day that it isn't.

Un-user friendly as in unusable by anyone except you or will a basic comp user be able to use it.

I'll agree it's not as user-friendly, but it is pretty damn cool.

It should have created a 'shell swapper' icon on your desktop. Double click that, choose Aston over Explorer(or choose Shell Swapper), press next, use all default settings until you get to the end. If it doesn't do it automatically, you'll have to log off your name and back in.

If you chose Shell Swapper, everytime you login you'll have the option to choose Explorer or Aston. If you want to use Aston, do the obvious. Explorer, you don't have to do anything complex for either.
To change back to Explorer while in Aston, use the Shell Swapper feature again. It's in your start bar.

Yo, downloaded Aston for my laptop the other day. Having an iconless desktop is a nice thing and there's plenty of nifty touches. At the moment I've just got the standard Aston shell (which is still pretty cool) but I'll be checking the other themes out soon.

Hey AI, when you download Aston on WinXP, does it stay on your account or go to everyone's? Because my dad hates it when that happens.(the latter, that is)

You can tell it to always start into Explorer, always start into Aston, or always start into the shell switcher. You may also choose which profile it applies to, or all.
