We all know that Disney is the king of animated movies. So, what are some good animated movies that weren't made by the House of Mouse?

Funny, not too long ago a friend of mine asked me to name a seriously good Dreamworks film that wasn't Shrek. I sat there going "uhhhh" for a long time.

I've always wanted to see The Thief and the Cobbler, but I bet it's good.

^Well, as far as Dreamworks goes, I liked 'The Croods' and 'Mr. Peabody and Sherman', but I was very, very drunk when I saw them, so...you know. Grain of salt.

Anyone here seen 'Triplets of Belleville' or 'The Illusionist'? That Sylvain Chomet knows how to make a weird, weird movie, man. Good stuff.

'Sita Sings the Blues' was super great. Odd film. Available to watch for free over at YouTube.

Oh duh. I forgot that was Dreamworks. It doesn't feel like a Dreamworks movie (because it's actually good - oooohhhh bada boom).

Mr. Peabody and Sherman was good too. I don't think it did too well though at the box office. I would have wanted to see a sequel.

And yeah! We're Back! That's the name of it. I watched that a million times when I was a kid.

I remember liking 'Prince of Egypt' lots. Like, it ain't no 'Ten Commandments', but then, that's a hell of an act to follow.

The Prince of Egypt is like the only Biblical movie that actually acknowledges the fact that people in the desert aren't pasty white.

To answer the topic: How to Train Your Dragon 1&2, Kubo and the Two Strings, Rise of the Guardians, all of the Persona 3 movies (I'm not excluding anime bc these are some of my favorite animated movies of all time you can fight me), Millennium Actress (again, excluding "anime" is just excluding Japanese animated movies which seems arbitrary, and since this is another all time favorite I'm listing it), Coraline.....

I actually like every single film I've listed here better than any Disney movie I can think of. Not that they don't do some good work, but they're by no means ~objectively~ the best at what they do.

^^Doesn't mean it's better than 'Ten Commandments', or 'Ben-Hur'. Or 'Jesus Christ Superstar', for that matter.

I haven't seen Kubo and the Two Strings yet :(

Disney is one of those household name that kids scream all the time, along with Pixar, and I often forget other things exist.

Oh also the Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea. DEFINITELY Song of the Sea. <3 <3 <3

Maybe not the newest stuff. I didn't really understand people going bananas over 'Frozen'. It was okay. There were sublime moments, and really trite parts, as well. I think that might be the recentest Disney flick I've seen (although like what's to say what counts as an according-to-Hoyle Disney flick, now they own Marvel and Lucasfilm and all).

Think my favourite Disney flick is 'Great Mouse Detective'. That thing was sharp as a razor. Didn't have no stupid bullcrap, no comic-relief characters. Basil is one of those intensely likeable unlikeable protagonists. Like House. Like, you'd probably hate him if he wasn't so great. Yeah.

Looks like computer animated counts.

In that case, I also like Fantastic Mr. Fox, anything with Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, Coraline, Box Trolls, HTTYD, and Kubo.

^^The Great Mouse Detective has the best Disney Villain Death IMO. Ratigan falling from Big Ben? Man, I went crazy over that climactic battle as a kid at the time. I thought that was the most epic thing I had ever seen. I wonder though now that I think about it if it was in any way inspired by the Lupin the Third movie, The Castle of Cagliostro, which was released in '79. That movie has a strikingly similar climactic battle in a clock tower.

Boo, thank you for reminding me that I was wrong. Great Mouse Detective out-ranks a couple on my list. I **** love that movie.

Most of Don Bluth's earlier stuff. An American Tail, The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, The Secret of NIMH. I seem to be in the minority in that I don't think Anastasia was all that great.

I thought The Prince of Egypt and The Road to El Dorado were great. I don't think I've seen any CG films by Dreamworks that I've really liked though.

Anything by Laika. Coraline, ParaNorman, Kubo and the Two Strings. Haven't seen The Boxtrolls yet, but I've heard good things about it.

Other than that, I can think of Charlotte's Web, Persepolis, and Rango. There are probably a lot more I can't remember at the moment.
