I thought this was going to be Zoolander 2 for some reason. I am all about Zoolander but I am not sure about a sequel 15 years late.

Looking at that rabbit before even clicking the video, do they always just give every character the same dumb looks on their faces from film to film? And straight copy/paste the eyes?

It is Disney. The answer is yes, the lead artists actually have expression reference sheets and pose reference sheets that they refer to when keying the animation. Sometimes they straight-up rotoscope existing animation to save on production:

Yes, but those are all hand drawn, that probably saved then countless hours, and there's only so many ways you can do eyes and expressions.

3d modeling is difficult guys.

You don't even know.

Those paychecks make it bearable, I'm sure.

I would assume.

Disney is surprisingly immune to the troubles a lot of CG animation studios are immune to. But maybe it's just well hidden. It's hard to say.

So are these, for the most part. The storyboarding is all by hand and the designs and expressions are all by hand, creating a 3D model for a venture this big is, generally speaking, something that takes place after a lot of technical planning. The software doesn't do a lot for you and inverse kinematics, etc, are actually a real bitch to use.

But no, it's not just in the expressions. It's literally everything broken down to a machine-like precision where the same angles and scene builds are used and re-used on purpose because they're what sells. The plots are broken into specific movements because they're proven. The company has a very specific formula for creation that they bury in almost everything they make. There are angles animators never use simply because they're a pain in the ass, and some efforts like Akira become industry legends because of their technical merits for these reasons.

But no, they aren't using the full range of eye-types, etc. They're slapping human eyes onto anything that moves because Disney always does, they're using character tropes that they're sure will work because they always do, so after a short while it all starts to look and sound familiar.

It's not a rational reason to dislike it on principle, really it's just another reason why Disney sells and some people get burnt out on it.

I don't doubt that it's enjoyable but as with most recent Disney flicks I'll probably wait until someone drags me to see it and be entertained/pleasantly surprised rather than seek it out actively.

The trailers have annoyed me but I really need to learn my lesson about trailers bc usually they market the parts of the movie I enjoy the least.

If there's one thing I've been learning about Disney it's that if the trailer is terrible than it'll be critically acclaimed. Meanwhile, if the trailer is pretty good then the movie will just be okay.

At least it's consistent?

Sister took me to see it today. It was actually pretty good, would recommend.

Aside from having the entire DMV scene spoiled, I thought it was very enjoyable, and surprisingly topical with its themes of stereotypes and prejudice. Would definitely recommend as well.
