We all remember waking up early on Saturday morning to watch cartoons and eat sugary cereal. But, what happened? Why did they die out?

Their ecological niche disappeared.
It was one thing to have a dedicated block of children's programming on Saturday morning some thirty-five years back, when there were fewer channels in general. Like, back then there were some shows for kids to watch after school, but they basically stopped on a dime at 5:30------like, before 'The Simpsons', it was practically unheard-of to see an animated show air during primetime. It just didn't happen. So setting aside time on Saturday mornings for cartoons had a certain value back then. Compare to today, where there are whole networks dedicated entirely to cartoons. A block of Saturday morning dedicated entirely to cartoons isn't as special in a world with Cartoon Network, Toon Disney, Boomerang, Nickelodeon (if you like garbage), The Hub (is the Hub still around?), et al.
Probably also bears mentioning that a lot of kids watch shows through streaming services or digital cable, which aren't restricted to any particular time of week.

What about the Flintstones?

Yeah this "on demand" scheduling has killed it, good memories though. It was one of the few times I enjoyed being up early as a kid haha.

It is not. It got reabsorbed by Discovery and turned back into a Discovery Kids sort of channel. It still has a lot of it's lineup from The HUB as morning programs, though. They still air new episodes of My Little Pony and Littlest Pet Shop and whatever else there is.

I vaguely recall Saturday Morning Cartoons but instead I was excited for Saturday Morning Video Games. I'd just turn off the TV and play video games, happy that it was 10 AM and I'd be beating up Bowser instead of having my soul die on a stone cold desk.

Saturday morning cartoons became Saturday morning much needed sleep for me.
