Looking for a specific type of anime

#1

Post by ninja666 » Sat Mar 08, 2014 6:38 pm

I want to watch an anime of a type I'm not sure even exists. I'm not really into anime shows (I watch full-length titles more eagerly) so I don't know any - you are given a free rein in recommendations. I want an anime taking place in a world stylized off ancient/medieval Japan or actual ancient/medieval Japan or any type of setting where fighting with melee weapons and/or powers is the staff of life. Sounds like any shounen title, eh? That's where my problem starts - I absolutely hate and loathe shounen titles, yet epic swordfights are cool to me. I want an anime title where you can see such fights once in a while but the series are focused on story and lore rather than said fights and the good ol' swordsmanship is more of a brain cooldown from extensive thinking about the plot (if you catch my drift). Any suggestions?

Definitely Basilisk, for starters, but also try Samurai Shamploo.

Incidentally, try Fushigi Yugi. It's set in ancient China, not Japan, but it's pretty great. Give it a few episodes, though. The series progresses fast but starts weird, and it was long-running. Inuyasha was basically a lame imitation of it in a lot of ways.

I've already watched it when I was little. I don't remember much of it, but isn't it an overly cheesy romance anime where the whole plot is about a girl who had a crush on a guy from the past?

There are strong romance elements, but the overall story focuses on Miaka's adventure to collect warriors to awaken a god to send her home. It is rather complicated and essentially every one of the warriors is destined to fall in love with her or something similar. You're right in that it's not 100% action, though.

I liked Inuyasha. Maybe I'll check it out.
