The Academy dgafs about animation, what else is new

So, basically the Academy voters are largely ******* with no respect for animated film production whatsoever.

Like, what the ****.

3/7 academy voters didn't even bother watching all of the animated films? I mean, I personally have never given two butts about the Academy Awards because IMO my opinions as to which movies are better are far more relevant to my life than a panel of people I don't know, but since a lot of people take these very seriously [especially since winning awards is a great credential to have under your belt to further your career in film] it is a MASSIVE "**** you" to the people who poured time, money, and their hearts into these films to just brush aside this category because you don't think they're important.

If you can't find value in every genre of filmmaking, you quite frankly should NOT be in the position of an objective judge. You're a biased douche. Ugh.

Yeah, it's pretty common knowledge that the only animation studio that the academy voters give a remote f*** about is Disney/Pixar.

I read something similar regarding the Academy of Recording Arts or whoever it is that votes for the Grammys that says for genres like hip hop the voters don't listen to all the albums, explaining how Macklemore who made an album with three top 10 hits would beat Kendrick Lamar despite Kendrick releasing one of the most acclaimed albums of the past decade.

I really liked Toy Story 3 of course but almost all of the punch it packed was due to meta nostalgia and timing; as a stand-alone movie it really wasn't as good IMJUSTSAYING

will never not be mildly butthurt that 'triplets of belleville' lost out to 'finding nemo'

i can about tolerate 'up' beating 'fantastic mr fox' and 'secret of kells', even though they were both better, because 'up' was still really good

but seeing entire bullsh*t like 'finding-ass nemo' take the oscar really hammered home how worthless the academy voters are

Agreed that at the very least, "Up" was a really good movie, but Fantastic Mr. Fox had fricken style, man that movie was excellent

90% certain academy voters default to "did Pixar make it? it was probably the best one, let's go with that"

I was disappointed Fantastic Mr. Fox didn't win best animated film because it was probably the closest Wes Anderson will ever get to an Oscar aside for maybe a screenplay award.

but I'm sad that none of Satoshi Kon's films ever did, because they are also **** superb. They just don't have the same American market.

Some of the greatest films are animated. Actually, the majority of live action, big-budget action flicks lately are technically about half CGI so yeah.

I noticed people accept CGI more easily than "cartoons", with a few Disney exceptions. Especially older folks. Weird thinking. They sit there admiring Happy Feet, and denounce adult anime flicks before giving it a shot. It is frustrating but then I remember they're idiots.

^^^ I don't think they have to be dubbed. The Wind Rises was nominated for this past year despite the English dub not premiering until a few weeks ago

'Tokyo Godfathers' could so easily have won if it'd got nominated. Like, super good and also fairly straightforward (especially for a Kon flick)----not even your Academy knuckleknobs could have found it too challenging.

^^ then what on earth decides which foreign animated films get nominated? Really there's no excuse for not nominating any of Satoshi Kon's. I think it's just a depressing matter of popularity/Western recognition

Oscar nominations are made solely by Academy members who work in that category*, so at least the nominations are presumably coming from people who actually respect animation, even if the actual award is being decided by nimrods who didn't watch the films. (Though at least SOME of the people who didn't watch the films were honest about it & abstained from voting on that category.)

*Except for Best Picture, which takes nomination votes from every member of the Academy.

^ that 3/7 number IS the people who abstained because they couldn't be bothered. We are just trusting that the other 4 gave enough **** to actually watch all of them. Hopefully that's true.

I find it hard to believe there are never any foreign animated films that are good enough to be nominated, I'm sure there are plenty every year that are at least as good as the American ones being nominated [since they aren't always all that phenomenal]. I'm wondering what sort of actual lengths they go to to actually try and watch foreign animation. Heck, even the local ones tend to just be the ones everyone heard of in that year, never anything remotely obscure. It's like animated movies that weren't shoved in your face just get swept under the rug.

I just honestly don't believe it's treated with any sort of academic respect whatsoever
