Star Trek Into Darkness

#1

Post by Calamity Panfan » Wed May 29, 2013 4:11 pm

I was a big fan of the Star Trek reboot of 2009, and with a villainous Benedict Cumberbatch I was hooked on the idea of this sequel. I saw it last week and I really really enjoyed it. J.J. Abram's proved himself to be one of the best blockbuster directors out there today and I'm excited to see what he does with Star Wars. The cast of this is so fantastic, too. Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, and Benedict Cumberbatch? Yes please.

Only complaint is that
sometimes it seemed to take TOO much from Wrath of Khan. Also "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!" as yelled by Quinto isn't nearly as good as it is yelled by Shatner. But nobody can match Shatner in anything anyway.
and that's the waaaaaaaaaay the news goes

I like how if you take the "Star" out of the title it just becomes "Trek Into Darkness" which is a complete sentence that could be the title of a totally different movie.

I saw it a week ago. Wasn't bad, though I think I prefer
Montalban's handsome-chested space tyrant to Cumberbatch's Neo clone.
captain kirk's a furry

So. During that fight scene on the bad guy ship.
They show Khan squeezing Scotty's head, and then they have that horrible crunching sound accompanied by a dramatic orchestra sting, and I was all, 'Holy crap! They just murdered Scotty!' Like, all right, true talk, guys---no one gets to murder Scotty. I grant he has to die at some point, but, like, it has to be of old age, or maybe the ship he's on blows up or something. You can't just have some creep up and do a Mortal Kombat-ass fatality on him. That dog won't hunt.
Movie was really good.

I like seeing Peter Weller in anything---it's been a while.

I'm not sure we saw the same movie, or perhaps I just need to watch it again.
That wasn't Scotty's he had his hands on, it was that one girls father. You know, the admiral/commander of the whole star fleet.
Wow. I totally must have conflated those events in my head. (In my defense, my lady friend was sort of grabbing my arm and making 'I don't care for this overly much' noises during that part, so...you know. Distractions and all.)

I thought it was a great movie and with Cumberbatch it was even better.

My favorite part was where
after talking to Kirk for the first time, Benedict Cumberbatch turned to Watson & told him to sign Thorin's contract. I haven't seen this movie yet.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

My favorite part was when
J. J. Abrams ripped off the ending of Star Trek II
. Oh wait, not my favorite part.

The movie was fun, I'll admit it; I really enjoyed it. Even if it was
unoriginal
and had plot holes the likes of which of a
Dreadnought-class starship
could fly through.

I enjoyed it because it was well-acted and visually pleasant, for the most part. Of course, I got teary-eyed when
Kirk mirrored Spock's death in Star Trek II
but it felt a little weird that
they didn't wait too long for him to "get better"
. Kinda clunky writing in the ending, though. Don't know why, but I've felt that movie endings have been somewhat anti-climactic here recently. Felt the same way about Iron Man 3, but to a much lesser extent. Still thoroughly enjoyed both movies, so I ain't even mad tho.

Was anyone fooled by
Kirk's death? I saw him heading for the reactor, and I thought, "Oh, he's going to die like Spock did in WoK and then they're going to use Khan's blood to bring him back."
^^^Nope. Figured the bit with the tribble was going somewheres.

Man. I don't know precisely which character it was came up with the big torpedo switcheroo (smart money's probably on McCoy), but whoever it was comes away with the 'cool guy of the movie' award. God absolutely damn, son.

^ I think it was Spock's idea, but McCoy was the one who did all the dirty work.

A friend of mine pointed out that the Tribble thing was kind of a Chekhov's Gun, and then made the point that Chekhov in the reactor core was also a Chekhov's Gun because WELL **** SON CHEKHOV SAVES THE DAY

one of the only films i've liked some of the action set-peaces so much i've actually stopped the blu-ray and rewound it to watch again.

don't like star trek that much, but, loved this film
