I'm not sure how many of you know about this , but basically there's this Japanese battle royale/murder mystery video game that is sort of like the abominable offspring of Phoenix Wright and Persona where basically a bunch of teenagers have to kill each other to escape entrapment [a premise we have all seen before in some form] but then when a murder happens it turns into a weird courtroom where you have to solve the murder mystery by screaming at each other. Also there are social links.

And people die horribly and it's rather great.

Downside is it was never translated to English, but a lot of people [myself included] read a fully-translated Let's Play someone posted on somethingawful [if you google it it should be like the 4th hit] to experience the game. Because it's awesome. So I suggest if you are interested you do that, or if you'd rather not, you can check out its incipient anime adaptation:

Dangan Ronpa has been a huge Something Awful project and I've been meaning to get into it myself at some point.

It's finally done now, I'm aware it probably took ages in the making. They posted links to all of the relevant soundtracks too, so you can listen like you're actually playing the game. It's pretty swell.

I'm aware but I thought it best not to get into that while I have things to get done, especially considering how much time I've dedicated to DR1 [time that really ought to have been spent doing productive tings] >_>

tumblr hype was a little ridiculous but I'll vouch that it is definitely good

I like how at the beginning of the intro they kept the same 2.5-D style for the executions, but then after the first bit they more or less just recycled the game cutscene after that. but w/e dangan ronpa anime

the anime is on episode 6 already and considering how far in the plot they are I AM REALLY NOT CONVINCED THEY SHOULD ONLY BE ON EPISODE 6 like they probably have limited resources or whatever but that's p damn rushed

Which would you recommend starting with?

Well, basically, the game tells the story better IMO but since right now all you have is the Let's Play, not everyone would be all that willing to go through the 'effort' to experience it; so if you just want to see the story and characters unfold the anime is definitely easier but I would definitely say that if you're willing, see the game first.

[[then again, that's always my stance on everything game-adapted, so yeah... I tend to be of the "the anime/manga/whatever is for enjoyers of the game who want to see something familiar they love in a new light, and not a replacement thereof" camp]]
