Overrated Movies
OK, there's a huge difference between a movie you hate that everyone else loves, and an overrated movie. A movie you hate that everyone else loves......is self explanatory. An overrated movie is a movie you enjoyed, but didn't see it was film awesomeness. You just saw it as a fun way to waste a couple of hours.
One of the biggest for me, and i'm sure alot of people are going to smack me, is The Empire Strikes Back. Don't get me wrong, this is still a great movie, but, other than the "No, I am your father" bit, the movie is kind of boring. Good action, yes, but, it really does just feel like that forgettable middle movie. A New Hope was "OK, here's your characters, here's the story, now let's see where this goes!", Empire Strikes Back was, "OK, yeah, some stuff happens, and there's a huge ending!", Return of the Jedi was, "OK, now you know how it all happens, now let's see where this all goes, will Luke defeat Darth Vader? Or will Darth Vader defeat Luke Skywalker again?". I do like the movie, but, it just seems like it's longer than it needs to be. I've just always thought it was an ,"Eh" kind of movie.
Another huge on for me is Ted. Again, i'm sure i'm going to get smacked for that one. Again though, I do like this movie, but, damn did it get overhyped! People talked about it like it was this comedic gift from heaven or something. It just seemed like it was a movie we'll forget about in 10 years. I do love Family Guy, it's one of my favorite shows, i'm all for Seth McFarlane wanting to do something besides Family Guy, I love his humor, so, I was interested when I found out he was going to do a movie. A strange idea, but, it was a good movie still. For me, the best part of the whole movie was the scenes Joel McHale was in. Yeah, the talks Ted would have with his friend were funny, Mila Kunis was funny, but, I didn't see the movie as this amazing comedy that everyone should see. If they did a Ted 2, i'd see it, but, I wouldn't freak out and have to go to the theater every day for it or anything, i'd just wait until it came out on video, then rent it.

Insert any of the popular superhero movies of the past eleven years here.
Maybe I just have a steamroller-like disdain for the genre. Some of them were good. I kind of liked The Dark Knight. Still, enough with this ****e. For every $200 million plus budgeted superhero movie that gets made, there's ten $20 million budgeted movie that's not being made. But superhero movies consistently make loads and loads of money back, and studios refuse to take risks.
Also: A lot of John Wayne movies are great movies in and of themselves, but I just really can't stand John Wayne himself. I always hope his character dies (especially in The Searchers) but he almost never does.

hahahahaha not really it created the classic archetypes that the genre has used time and again. There were films about the mafia before, but none so influential and really none established it as a genre in the way Godfather did. That said, I haven't watched the Godfather, but historically what it did for film overall is massive. Mob members actually took inspiration from it.I REALLY HATE POKEMON! wrote:Just another mob film. You really gotta like the genre, then it is probably the best of them. I just don't care for three hours of eating, violence, criminal politics and weddings. I see its appeal, but it ain't for me.
I think at some point you're going to find all films are just films, no matter how well done they are. Just keep in mind at somepoint there were stage shows with cowboys in them, but a special show came along and actually created many of the well-loved tropes that cemented the Western as a genre.
Spider-man's a good talking point, though, because I felt while it was good cinema it was also questionable handling of the property. There was no point at which anyone should have been convinced that the odly-shaped and older Toby Mcguire made a convincing teenager or that he even suited the character of Peter Parker. Parker was always the sort of character who was a bit of a science fanatic and treated like an outcast for it, but with a brilliant personality who taunted villains more than he engaged them. The lack of the genius chemist side of Parker clashed with the original series' direction and reduced him to a very simple character. The combat was also very ground-oriented and tradition, which is kind of the opposite of Spider-man's abilities and missing the point overall.

^ I'm sure it did a lot for film, but on its own, ignoring chronology, it is "just another mob film." And if you don't like the genre, just skip it. It won't convert you.
I thought they got his character down in Spider-Man, but I do agree, Tobey wasn't passing as a teen. But the second and third films had quite a bit of aerial action.

I'm curious, since the 2 of you like Spider-Man, what did you think of the last movie? I haven't seen it yet, and was wanting to checking it out at some point. I don't care about comics or anything, so, I don't really care how close to the comics it was or anything, just as long as the movie was actually good.

I have not actually seen more than a few scenes of The Godfather, but what I've seen doesn't appeal to me. That's not to say that it's a bad movie by any means, but it's just not something I'd make an effort to see. Maybe if I saw the whole thing, I'd change my opinion, but what I have seen definitely hasn't sold me.

I agree with you Dizzy. The movie does start out slow, it does have a good share of action in it, but, it does start up slowly. It's definitely a story driven movie, it's not just a simple, "AH! ACTION!!!!!! AHHHHH!!!!!! GO GO GO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!" The first time I saw it, I had a hard time getting into it, but, after awhile, I started to really enjoy it.

Hmmm... after further thought, I can think of one way in which The Godfather is overrated:
In terms of Francis Ford Coppola's filmography, it overshadows Apocalypse Now, which I've always felt was his magnum opus. Also, it overshadows Taxi Driver, which might be my single favorite film of the 1970's... though Apocalypse Now is a very, very close second.
Either way, all three films are large parts of the reason why the 1970's is my favorite decade in Hollywood history.
------------
Oh, I'm going to get crucified for this, but Star Wars is overrated. The first half of the movie contains one really awesome image of Luke with the two suns in the sky, but otherwise it doesn't really get interesting until they get to the Cantina. At least that's what I discovered the last time I saw it, after having not seen it for a few years.
The Empire Strikes Back, however, is significantly less so. One of the best blockbusters of all time.

^ No, I'm going to be crucified. Both Apocalypse Now and Taxi Driver are overrated. They both make me sleepy, although Taxi Driver had more going for it than the other two, Godfather/Apocalypse Now.
I think most classic films I don't like just don't have subject matter that interests me. Perhaps if war, or organised crime at all interested me, I'd love them...they're well-made films. Taxi Driver is the best of the three mentioned to me because it seems to be more of a "psychological" type of film.

For the record, I have very specific tastes and am quite picky about my movies. People don't seem to like my favorites, I've been told I have poor taste in film.
Favorites includeThe Last Samurai and The Matrix (I even find flaws in my favorites though, things I don't like; I can't quite give anything a ten).

Agreed about Star Wars. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, but, yes, A New Hope is slow until you get to the Cantina scene. Strangely though, even though I do think it is over-rated, it's one of my y favorite Star Wars movies (probably 2nd). I fully disagree about The Empire Strikes Back though. Other than the, "No, I am your father" scene, this movie is just boring. The Battle on Hoth was great though, that was really awesome. Other than that and the "No, I am your father" scene though, this movie bored the crap out of me. Oh well, I also enjoyed Revenge of the Sith, so, maybe my opinion sucks.
