I'm not big on horror, but I really dug The Cabin in the Woods

I've always loved zombie films. Romero's Day of the Dead remains my favorite.

The Shining, A Tale of Two Sisters, and Evil Dead II. Natch.
Also, Shaun of the Dead, but that's not really a "horror" film...

Psycho and The Blair Witch Project. Yes, I actually like that movie.
And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

Cabin in the Woods was an extremely good Meta Movie that will keep fans talking for years. It was supposed to be like a Sucker Punch that didn't suck.
Every Halloween I marathon Black & White Horror Movies starting with Dawn of the Dead, White Zombie, and The Last Man on Earth.
This year I think I'm going to start with Political horror movies, but so far all I have is Homecoming.

As fars as traditional horror goes, 'The Shining', 'The Exorcist' and 'Night of the Living Dead' are top. I'd also put 'Alien' and 'The Thing' in there---I guess they're considered arguable cases because they have alien monsters instead of earth monsters (seems like a pointless nit-picky distinction to me, but ehhh).
Slasher-wise, I think 'Halloween' is pretty class. Does 'Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer' count as horror? Because that one was really good, but sort of disquieting and hard-to-watch. Like, it's definitely not 'hey, let's have a fun horror movie marathon' material.
Action-horror? Man, 'John Carpenter's Vampires' is pretty rawsome. 'Evil Dead II' is, too.

Zombie movies are really the only ones I like much.

The Thing is my favorite, hands-down. I also loved the Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, but those skew into comedy. See also: monster-themed action, ala Resident Evil and Underworld. The first of each of those series were good, can't really say the same for the rest.
Oh, and Pan's Labyrinth is basically fantasy horror. I thought that was really good.
I used to watch slasher flicks a lot, but the industry dried up pretty badly. Can't say much positive for it.
As a plus for a halloween-related comedy, I'd also recommend Young Frankenstein. Can't go wrong, there.

^Man, 'The Thing' is so great. It sort of expertly combines that claustrophobic 'no hope for escape or rescue' situation with a paranoid 'body snatchers' vibe. Also, the creature effects are legitimately messed up...
Incidentally, I make it a point to watch 'Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein' every year around Hallowe'en. It's a perfect union---the best Abbott and Costello movie (which is saying something) and also a huge love-letter to all the old Universal monster movies (and featuring Bela Lugosi, Lon Cheney Jr and Vincent Price, to boot). It's so, so good.
